Dell Inspiron 9300 fan noise

post #1 of 7

Hello!

Both the fans of my Inspiron 9300 make a lot of noise. Previously in order to reduce noise I tried to completely remove the fans and cleaned them with compressed air. At that time I found it weird that they did not make much noise when they rotated (pretty fast) because of the compressed air. The fans keep making the same amount of noise. I notice that if I apply some pressue next to the keyboard where the fans are located the noise emitted changes.

So, my question.. are the motors themselves making the noise? Or is it that the vibration caused by the motor making the fan to rattle against other parts of the laptop? If its the second I could try to fix the fans more securely. I have not been able to get any replacement fans hence this question.

Thanks!

I would go with the motors, and would consider replacing them if your temps are climbing higher than normal.

I had the same fan problem with my inspiron 6000, but I searched and found this:

I'd just recommend what nirvana posted. You can control your fans manually and keep them from going on high until necessary (gaming or hd video).

Slowing the fans down doesn't really fix the problem. laptopcoder, a lot of these laptop fans are of the sleeve bearing type and they will eventually suffer from wear. In my experience the best route is just to replace them, but you can also try adding lubricant. This http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/0,1...2135514,00.htm is a decent guide.

This guy is probably just a casual laptop user and doesn't want to go as far as lubricating his fans. Considering the amount of noise decrease going from high to low, I think setting the fans on low would be the best solution for him.

@niravana21

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook computer for which I wasn't certain if the noise coming from the back right corner was fan noise or something else.

The link to the tool that you provided proved invaluable in isolating the problem to the fan. And the download link didn't even try to surreptitiously download Google Chrome.  :)

Thank you.
