Gateway P-7808u FX gaming Rig Reviewed

Gateway's newest introduction to the gaming laptop market is reviewed by engadget. The specs: 2GHz Core 2 Quad CPU, NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS (with 1GB of GDDR3), 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 500GB HDD spinning at 5400RPM all for $1699.

While there are places for definite improvement like the LCD that is limited to 1440x900 and the HDD only being 5400 it seems like a pretty good gamer for the price.

^^That is one hot machine. I finally settled for the 7811FX due to the screen resolution preference, giving up the 1gigo gpu (in the 7805U as well).

cheers ...

And here I thought Gateway finally got wise with WUXGA after including it in the predecessor. Not sure why they took a step backward on that one. Supposedly a new config will have Blu-Ray according to laptopmag.com. Hopefully that one will be 1920x1200.

Is it possible to stick the 1GB 9800M GTS into the 7811fx? You'd think since it is basically the same exact laptop/board, it would work. I kinda want to sell my 512mb and get a 1GB version.

Not really since Gateway has this puppy soldered onto the mainboard. I know, was hoping the same ;-)

But in a way, it would be cheaper to swap out the LCD of the 780x series, and less messy.

cheers ...

Damn, I forgot about that little detail...

After having a couple Dell XPS laptops over 5 years, I was sorta used to being able to upgrade the graphics cards! D'oh!

Yep, afraid that Dell is the only one at this moment that allows the gpu swap/upgrade. But with the pricing that Gateway is pursuing, watch out.

cheers ...
