2 month old VGN-Z540 * Can I return it?

I have been a very happy ThinkPad owner for years. Matter of fact, I have one on the couch and one under the coffee table. They both have been great and when I did need a repair, I called support and it was in Atlanta.

I bought the Sony based on a lot of good comments about the model and the brand. So I thought I should give Sony a try.

My track pad started acting up and now it rarely works when you try to move anywhere on the page. The funny thing is that it is almost normal when it is not plugged in. When you plug it in, the track freezes and you get movement once in a while. I am not running anything in the background and I reinstalled the latest firmware. Nothing helped.

I called the SonyStyle store and the guy told me to send it in before I could finish my statement. He then told me it could take 10 to 15 business days to fix.

To do this I called the warranty tech support line. When someone finally picked up there was a ton of static. He instantly went into script mode. "My brother set up a tech support call in center in Mexico." He was actually reading the think like its the first time he had ever seen it. Let me tell you how they hire these guys and girls in other countries. They put an ad in the paper looking for people that can speak "some english". They they walk them through the standard issued that come up and give them a book of so called steps to solutions.

I could tell this was going to lead to a reformat so I asked to speak with a manager. He said sure, can I put you on hold for a minute. 15 minutes later the line died.

I thought when I purchased this laptop the techs at the sonystyle store were there to help. Guess not.

I got a nice deal on this pc but I would love to return it. I cant afford to wait that long to get my pc back. Im going to move back to Thinpad even though I love almost everything about this laptop.

The 2 year accidental warranty I bought has something called express in the name or description but that does not seam to help.

Thanks for letting me rant.

If you have ever heard of this problem with my trackpad, let me know.

Call Sony Style returns department and they should be able to check your receipt for a return date. If you bought the unit from Sony you'll have anywhere from 30-90 days to return it, depending on whatever deals were going on at the time.

If you purchased it from a third party you'll usually have less time. Most online retailers give you 30 days, most stores give you two weeks. If you go past that date there's nothing Sony can do about getting you a replacement unit. Your unit will need to go to the service department for repair.

In your case though you have a Z540 you don't have to send it in for repair. The Z series can be fixed onsite in your home. Call sony support they'll send a tech out to the house in about 2-3 business days.

Up for Sale

Thank you for your response. The notebook came back from repair and it works great. The trackpad is perfect now. They had to replace it and for some reason they replaced the Sprint card.

I spoke with sonystyle.com where I bought it and they are not working with me on returning it. I do love the machine and for what I paid, its amazing.

My only option now is to put it up for sale (no idea what to price it at). Maybe you could direct me to where it might be listed for the best results. The only reason I want to sell this great notebook is because I need next business day service. Im going to buy an IBM Thinkpad again. I know it will not be as sexy or perform as well but if I am leaving for Afghanistan in 3 days, I know that my notebook will be ready before I leave.

you can list it in our for sale forum once you have a total of 25 posts on the forum and 30 days of membership here. until then I have to take out the sale-related part of your post. I'm saving it for you, PM me if you need it back.

i don't get it. the problem that was the cause for you not wanting it is now fixed and works perfectly according to you and you now want to sell it? anyways, if you bought it with mastercard platinum card, visa platinum, or amex, you might check with the credit card company to see if you can return it through them under one of their various purchase assurance programs.
