Vaio PCG K23 Monitor Does Not Work...Well sort of doesn't

Basically I'll just list the details below, kind of says it all. other than the fact that I am going crazy trying to getthe back light to work under Windows again.

Sony Vaio PCG K23
Raedeon IGP 345M video card
Monitor works up until Windows loads.
Monitor works when running Ubuntu. Repeated 3 times
Monitor works when at C: prompt.
External monitor works when plugged in to port.

If I look hard enough I can see my desk top on the screen so I know it’s there
Have run System Restore 6 times from restore disc that were made on first use.
Have run System Restore 3 times by pressing the F10 key.
BIOS was still at default values, but I reset it anyway
Windows XP Home SP2 and is completely up to date.
All drivers are as current as I could find.
Windows indicates all drivers are working properly.
Refresh rate is at 60HZ.
I know the monitor works as it works fine with Ubuntu. However I cannot run one of the primary applications
I need to use under Ubuntu so I have to have Windows loaded.

Sony tech support of no help.
Windows support of no help.
ATI support of no help.

Have you tried to start in safe-mode and see if it works?

Yep.

As a matter of fact even when Windows is performing it's recovery routine the screen goes dark.

Did it make any differences if you have the comp on battery alone or on AC alone?

It's been a long while but I'm pretty sure I've run it without the AC cord connected and it still didn't work. I'll try that when I get home just in case though.

But how/why would that make a difference? Also if it works with Unbuntu (unplugged and plugged) why wouldn't it work with windows?

Pretty sure it's software related. But then again I've failed at finding the problem so far, so who knows.

I hesitate to say that it is the inverter since it works under Ubuntu.

Forget about the recovery, what about booting with the Windows installation CD, would the screen staying up during the whole time?

Anything to do with Windows the screen goes dark. I can go into any of the setup menus and I'm good, until I allow windows to load.

You think that maybe Windows causes too much draw on power and causes the inverter to fail?

I never heard about Windows causing hardware error like dimming/darkening the screen - BSOD, yes due to bad drivers. But then, there is always a first time.

I am at a loss just like you. But as mentioned, I would try another drive and install Windows from installation disk. Let it go through the cycle of setting and booting the 1st time. I am just trying to play with different scenarios of Windows bootup.

I'll try that when I get home. I'll try anything at this point.

Oh wait, I don't have the install disc. All I have is the restore disc from when I first bought it.

The dumpster might be next

Borrow any Windows installation disks just to drive out on another drive. Good lucks.

I have a copy of Windows XP Pro that I can borrow form my work but no CD key. I'm assuming that won't accept the key I have for XP Home on the sticker I have on my laptop huh?

Never know, if it is a retail disk, you have a good chance to have it accepting your COA key. But that will be way into the boot up of the Windows, and that is what we want to find out if it can.

cheers ...
