It's torx7 (T7) ,or at least that was worked for me.

Its either T8 or T9. I personally use T8 but I hear T9 fits the best.

Good Luck

Let us know how it goes
what is the problem your having exactly ?
when you say could not get it to boot - no post boot up at all ?

If you have 2 memory DIMMS try one at a time in each slots.

What OS was the drive setup with, and what OS are you trying to retrieve it with ?

well as far as the laptop goes - looks like your problem maybe either a dead GPU, or a bad motherboard.

as far as the drive goes - have you tried to boot off the laptop drive with your desktop ? (disconnect the other drives)

The file systems between XP media and XP Pro are a little different, you maybe able to import the drive but that does not always go well.

you can search around for some data receovery tools and try to extract the files you need, but it can be hard to find a free version that will do that.

If you use the external USB drive you can also goto Control panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Drives and see if you can import the drive just do not use the format option, Hopefully you will get a convert option to either a basic or simple drive.

2nd that GPU and/or motherboard issue.

definitely if the drive is a sata drive, try it directly

Could a MOBO failure have also caused a hard drive failure?

Thanks,

I doubt very much that motherboard failure would cause the hard drive to go bad to the point that you cannot put it in an external and accessing it. Put the drive in another USB external housing and try again. Firewire connection can be dodgy at time depending on the machine and the port.

I've tried the drive on two separate external USB enclosures and couldn't get anything.

It's just weird to me that the screen is dead AND the drive is dead.

I was searching around the internet and found that a strong magnetic field could produce this kind of damage. Something like a tape degaussing gun, for example.
Strange indeed. Throw the drive in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes - wrap it up good though. Hopefully the cold would wake the dead up so to speak.

Ouch - that could be an expensive options, especially when you cannot access the drive.

Hardware failure works with different time frame and priority than we do

By the way there are so many free back-up and imaging software out there that you can choose from

My M1710 actually just did something similar.

It turns on, but the screen is blank.

I figured out that if I connect an external monitor to it, it actually works (on the laptop screen, not using the external monitor but just plugging one into it) for some reason.

Not that it matters, since the screen has a bunch of green jagged lines streaking through it I get a BSOD when Windows tries to boot up anyway .

On a side note, my laptop is out of warranty but thanks to this:

http://www.nvidiasettlement.com/

I still have a few months to try to claim a new laptop since I'm pretty positive the GPU is the problem.

My question/problem is, I don't have my Proof of Purchase anymore (which is required to apply for the settlement). I've looked on the Dell website, but I can't find anywhere that mentions anything about printing out a PoP. If I called Dell, would they be able to send me one, or am I just out of luck?

I don't see it.

I have that I just don't see where to use it for the proof of purchase.

I have an account and the laptop is attached to at (at least I think so).

The only place I can find any information about it is under the Warranty Status page though, which shows me stuff like the original configuration:

But I don't see where to use the Express Service Code for the proof of purchase information.

EDIT: Dumb ImageShack resizing...
