MT3707 Touch Pad Button

Hello,

My wife has a Gateway MT 3707 that she purchased a couple of years ago. Recently, due to normal wear and tear, a couple of the plastic tabs holding down the left mouse button next to the touch pad broke. The button is still usable, but only the weight of the button itself is holding it in place.

I contacted Gateway support on the premise that this is like replacing a lost key on the keyboard, hoping that they would be able to send me a replacement button. Their response was that the button is not available separately, that it is part of the touch pad assembly, that the whole assembly would need to be replaced in order to replace the button, and that the estimated charge would be $200. Of course we are past the warranty coverage.

Maybe I'm naive, but I find it hard to believe that I need to spend $200 in order to replace a 10-cent piece of plastic, especially when the rest of the touchpad assembly is working flawlessly. Looking at the button, it seems as though all one needs to do is snap a new one in.

I've searched the web for any web sites that sell buttons but with no luck (I've found enough sites for replacement keyboard buttons, though). Is there any advice about what I could do next or sites I should surf to? Appreciate the help.

The touchpad is being attached to the palm rest area with some clips, or screws. The replacement process is quite simple once you get the palm rest out, just watch out for the ribbon cable that connects the touchpad to the board.

For the touchpad assembly, P.M. SpinItch here in the forum and see if he can get you the spare used part somewhere. If not eBay?

cheers ...

I don't know what the exact assembly looks like, but see if you can repair it using some sort of epoxy, if it's a plastic piece that snaps in.

As qhn was saying, the touchpad assembly is attached to the top portion of your laptop. Get that removed and see if you can repair it yourself.

I also work for a recycling company here, and my main job is to sort through everything and refurbish laptops. If I come across anything of that model, I'll let you know.

slimbarx...I was thinking about the epoxy route as well. It has two long prongs that jut out to the left that fit just under the palm rest. The issue is that one is lost and the other I believe is somewhere inside the unit. Have a feeling that not having the missing prong won't solve this.

That leads to another question, that of taking the unit apart. I had removed all the screws from the underside of the case and it still would not come apart. I'm sure I'm missing others that should also be removed...or perhaps there is something else I'm overlooking. I certainly don't want to force anything here, do some permanent damage, and upset my better half :-)

Appreciate the lookout offer at your work. If you do come across it, let me know.

Becareful with the top lid, if you're forcing something and it's bending...then you're missing a screw. usually the screws for the top lid are BEHIND the hinge for the LCD screen, and are covered by a small piece of plastic which could be removed with a flat head. Be sure to look for other screws located under the battery, and the hard drive bay as well.

Send me some clear high res pictures of your mouse button. There's a very good chance this button is not model specific. Make sure you place it next to a ruler so I can gauge the size.

I'm at work now but let me see if I can get this done tonight or tomorrow (have to watch the kids tonight which might delay things). Appreciate the help.

I checked out the warehouse today, and I have not come across anything similar to that. But I'll still keep an eye out. It's a good thing you've posted it on the board, perhaps another person may help you out.
