For those who haven't used PCLOS yet, this is one of the best "livecd" distros out there. It's polished runs great, and if you do have problems the forums there are extremely helpful. Give it a try you'll be thanking me later.

From the release notes:

PCLinuxOS 2009.1 Final Released
Written by texstar Wednesday, 11 March 2009 The Ripper Gang is pleased to announce the final public ISO release of PCLinuxOS 2009.1.

This release features kernel 2.6.26.8.tex3, KDE 3.5.10, Open Office 3.0, Firefox 3.0.7, Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, Ktorrent, Frostwire, Amarok, Flash, Java JRE, Compiz-Fusion 3D and much more. We decided to use kde3-5-10 as our default desktop as we could not achieve a similar functionality from kde4. We will however offer kde4 as an alternative desktop environment available from the repository once we stabilize it. PCLinuxOS is an rpm based distribution utilizing apt-get with a Synaptic Software Manager frontend. In addition to the above PCLinuxOS comes with mklivecd GUI, a nice utility to build a custom live CD from your install. Install or remove what you want then remaster your own cd. Great for backups or to give to friends. PCLinuxOS is also known as as rolling release distribution. What that means is you install once and update it when new applications become available from our repository.

Special thanks goes out to gettinther, Sal, Linuxera, Neverstopdreaming, Davecs, gri6507, Stumpy842 and etjr. Also to Enki Consulting for hosting the website and ibilio.org for hosting the software packages.

Also the pclos-gnome team are proud to the announce the 2009.1 release of pclos-gnome.

Featuring: kernel 2.6.26.8.tex3, Gnome 2.24.3, Mozilla Firefox 3.0.7, Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.17, Gnome office apps, Brasero, Gnome Power Manager, Exaile Music Player and many more!

Almost 2.5 gigs of software compressed on a single self bootable livecd that can be installed to your hard drive provided it is compatible with your system and you like the distribution. Over 8000+ additional packages available after hard drive install through the Synaptic Software Manager.

I hope this helps,

Ciao

Yeah, it's too bad that there isn't a 64bit version, unfortunately PCLOS only has a small development team made up entirely of volunteers and the groups working on it have been splintered into working on a Gnome version to go along with the default KDE (as mentioned in the release notes). I bet that if you're interested in working on recompiling to 64bit there would be several others in the forums who would be willing to help. Just post on the forums there and see what kind of response you get.

On a side note; if anyone is having a problem setting up WiFi from the "live" CD (does not apply to HD install) add "nonetwork" (without the quote marks) to the startup parameters then configure from the "Control Center" you'll be good to go. The problem seems to stem from the startup script aliasing LAN as eth0 and WLAN as eth1 even if your LAN isn't connected to the net. The problem lies with the Knoppix/Mandriva detection routines and not with the PCLOS implimentation.

I hope this helps

I've been using different versions of this Distro since Texstar (who was a developer of updated software ports for Mandrake) introduced it about 6-7 years ago. I love using the "live" CD for introducing friends to the "Linux world" and for trouble shooting other machines I work on. It's easy to setup, polished, well integrated and just "works".

I still prefer Gentoo as my favorite Distro installed on my box, but the complexity of setting it up prohibits me from using it elsewhere or recommending it to any but the most experienced users. But I highly recommend PCLOS to anyone who wants to try out Linux and since you don't need to make a commitment to use it, it's ideal for a "newbie" (much better than Ubantu or Kubantu IMHO).
