Dropped 8790 - LCD damaged

I guess I don't have enough karma points saved up.

I was just at Office Depot looking for a Targus backpack for my 8790. Went to the bathroom and placed my laptop on top of the trash can about 3 1/2 feet off the ground, in the standard black bag it came with. I hear a noise, turn my head, and I don't know how but the trash can is toppling over. Bag with 8790 inside lands hard directly on one corner with a loud smack. I take it outside and power up. It boots to the desktop, but the LCD is screwed: I can see the image but it's way dark, slightly smeared, and there's a big circular blob on the right side. Also the seam of the lid on both sides separated slightly from the LCD panel, although I was able to snap it back in place. Needless to say, I got sick to my stomach.

So has anyone had their 17" LCD replaced before? Is this covered by the 2 additional years coverage I purchased? If not, how much will this cost?

Damn, that sucks, I guess when UPS was shipping it to your house they must have dropped it hard. *cough* *cough*

Your two year additional warranty will not kick in until after the first year manufacturing warranty is over.
Therefore, check the wording of the manufacturers warranty to see if it covers those types of "injuries" to your laptop.
Maybe the LCD or video card needs adjusted as it may have gotten jarred/loose from the fall.

Could it be that the blob is caused by the LCD leaking after the impact? Yikes!!! Scary thought. Next time bubble wrap your laptop when travelling

Or maybe the lcd is only not lighting and that causes weird displays ?

I remember "Sardo Numsei" insured his or her laptop for this type of situation.

I can't offer help for you beyond that (I empathize; my cell phone's screen met its end after it was "loved" a bit too much by my hip and an air hockey table), but good luck.

The display is dark: no detail visible. However, when lit from the front you can see some details. There is no indication of damage on the surface of the LCD. I've increased the contrast of this image to make the damage more visible. The other bits are just dust.

I had planned to insure it, and was about 100 feet from a nice bag for protection!

Accidental damage is not covered under your warranty (either Sager's or your extened warranty). Sager can replace the screen for you for the cost of the screen plus labor, but I am not sure what that price is at this moment. Once they have it back, they will contact you with that info.

Sorry about the accident.

Eek. That site just makes me shudder. Well, judging that upgrading to the WSXGA+ screen is a 695 dollar option, you're probably looking somewhere in the area of 500 for a replacement of the regular screen. And that would be assuming no other part of the laptop was damaged during the fall.

Hmm... I'm thinking/hoping it's going to be less. I mean, my 19" Samsung LCD was $650. A 17" laptop display shouldn't be nearly as much, including labor. I hope.

I was able to use the DVI to the Samsung and check the system. Everything else seems to be fine. I could detect no other damage besides the display, and only the "liquid crystals" themselves; the surface of the screen is still pristine.

Just convert it to a desktop with an external LCD or CRT. The LCD cost will be prohibitively high...

Next time BUY insurance to protect these investments...

Cheers!

Dude.....my heart goes out for ya.
That's just aweful. I've only had mine for about a week, and I would die if that happened. Needless to say, you gotta get that screen fixed. Keep us updated on what happens. Right now it sucks really bad, but don't sweat it too bad.....you'll get it fixed.

That's it.....I'm going to Circuit City later to buy something solid to put my lappy in. With airbags. lol

Thanks for the encouragement. Oh it will definitely get repaired. I plan to kick some Mac a$$ with it.

what kind of insurance covers accidental damage like this?
Usually homeowner's (or in my case renter's) insurance, but need to make sure that their base policy covers computer equipment or if its an option. You can somtimes submit itemized lists to them to help in recovering for rare or unreplacable items. Some may also have appraisers (sp?) on reference to help.

You are all reminding me that I last checked on my insurance when I did not have a real notebook to worry about, now I have one that's not replacable (or at least the screen isn't). I'll need to give them a call.
