This is my brother's machine. It's a month old, and the little black spot in the corner of the screen has been there since Day 1. He said it's really hot, and if he cools it down with something it goes away for a while.
I've googled around, and most things I read with regard to this problem (mostly on Dell stuff, and on a Gateway 21" stand-alone monitor) say it's the screen inverter causing too much heat, and the foil is sticking to the display (best I can describe it, sorry).
I got THIS from another site..
Localized spot is created by the faulty inverter radiating heat through
the aluminum frame of the display and foil backing.
(Also I surmise overheating the very thin traces in the LCD at that
point.)
When he rubs the spot two things happen, the heat dissipates and also
the foil cools enough to release from that particular spot
Has anyone had this problem and have a fix for it? From what I read on the Dells, it eventually covers the whole screen and becomes unusable. If it was mine, I could probably replace the inverter, but I'm not sure if my brother is comfortable cracking open a brand new machine. Gateway could probably take care of it, but..
1. They'll just put in the same bad part, until they own up and recall them and put in a better part.
2. My bro moved to South Korea the day he bought the laptop, and needs it every day for both his jobs. As far as either of us can tell, there's no Gateway authorized service there.
I also read something about faulty Chinese capacitors, but that was related to the Gateway stand-alone monitor. Someone has made a whole website about that particular model and its faults.
