the LCD screen dims when i unplug the power cord (as if it is in battery savings mode). But i already adjusted to full power even when unplugged in control panel>power management. I also tried to use Fn + up arrow. But it is still dim. Any advices?

Check in your desktop personalisation options if you have another control for LCD dimming when on battery.

hmmm, search and download DimScreen (freeware and clean) and see if you can do something with it.

Its just the Dell BIOS behavior now. Unless there is an option to change it in the BIOS I have noticed that this is how the newer notebooks behave. You just simply can't get the computer as bright on battery as on AC (even though its electronically possible) because of the BIOS.

I have only noticed this on my mom's inspiron 1720 but I'm just guessing that's how all (or most) of the models are now.

I have a 1330 and my issue is trying to re-image it using Acronis True Home image disc and it will not recognize it upon start up after pressing F12. A blue screen appears. I have also tried to use ERD Commander to access the computer to deactivate a security setting but blue screen appears as well. Has anyone encountered this issue before? Would love some assistance.. My system has XP Professional as the operating system, 32-bit.

Re-image ... meaning you were trying to restore the back-up image onto the hard drive?

What is the error when you just started the system? Could be that the drive itself is bad?

Yes, I was trying to restore the back-up image and the error message stated:

stop: 0x0000007e (0xC0000005, 0x804EE120, 0xBA4F3A74, 0xBA4F3770)

That is a pretty general error that is caused by bad devices such as keyboard, video card, hard drive ... or even BIOS.

I would first remove and re-seat the ram modules and hard drive, try again. Then the keyboard ...

Question is what makes you decide to perform a restore? What was the original failure/issue that prompted you to perform a restore?

I suspect the video card is bad. On my original problem, upon start up, the screen was a dark greyish color. I immediately connected an external monitor and as soon as I plug it in, the laptop screen returned to normal. It works fine for the first day but if you leave the computer off more than 24 hours, the dark greyish screen returns and as long as I connect an external monitor, it works fine.
I also completed the suggestions mentioned in your last reply (re-seat the ram modules and hard drive, and the keyboard) upon connecting the external monitor the first time.
I am duped right now on this laptop and I also replaced the harddrive with a known good one and the problem is still there. I also updated the BIOS, re-installed the drivers, and replaced the RAM. The only thing I havent tried was the video card.

After the replacements that you did, yes ... video card is the next one on the radar screen.
