I say no, thats too much machine to buy cuz its in front of you.
Laptops are one of the worst investments because they lose value so fast.
Unless you were looking for a similar laptop to fill a need, your basically throwing money away. Do you have a bonafide need for a dedicated gaming laptop? otherwise save 1000$ and get a laptop with better portability and battery life that does everything but game well.

Not to mention the is speculation a new AW refresh is coming in the next couple months (they've been doing inventory clearing stuff) that will make it the much less of a good buy if the do drop new stuff.

I also say no. Buying a super powerful notebook with no warranty. I wouldnt take the chance.

I'm looking at the M17 because my M5750 doesn't handle the newest games at the level I'm looking for. I'm interested for the price I bid, not the $3500 it would cost new. I've bought both my gaming laptops without warranty with no issues. I'm still on the fence however. Thanks for the replies

I bought one of the M17x's off of alienware's ebay site for 1400.00 came with a 90 day warranty and also my hive info. Has played every game I have thrown at it, Crysis,Call of Duty world at war, Frycry2 & GTA4 with no sweat. I also got a 2nd chance offer on ebay for a m15x bought it, and waited 3 weeks for paypal to go through their dispute bull before I got my money back.

It sounds like a pretty good deal if you really want an M17, however you should be careful buying from people on eBay outside of auctions. I got a similar offer to buy an m15x with my non-winning bid, but it turned out to be a scam and I had to file fraud with my credit card that I used for Paypal to get my money back.

Ebay sent me the second chance "Buy it now" button email yesterday. I reluctantly decided to pass it by. I was a really good deal. Check it out on

Just buy one through Alienware directly. Get the lowest CPU, HDD, and RAM. Then buy an ES or QS chip of your choice from Ebay, a bigger HDD and 4GB of RAM from Newegg. I'm barely $2,500 into the beast in my sig.

EDIT: Of course this would void your Alienware Warranty though...so don't listen to me.

Says the guy with the QX9300 processor, have you priced those Intel chips. ROFL
post #10 of 11
I originally started out with the P8600, 2GB of RAM, and a single 160GB HDD. I bought the QX9300 for $600 shipped, and am currently selling my X9100 for $325. You can't beat $275 for a QX9300. Alienware wants $1,200. Even the OEM QX9300 is only $875 on Ebay.

Also, you don't have to get the C2Q, you could get a T9400.

Just trying to help you save some cash, man. No need for this 'ROFL' bulls*it.

I like a guy who takes a new AW machine and makes it better.

I water cooled my Area 51 desktop 2 months after AW delivered it in 2005. I got the you'll void your warranty cries back then. Shoot it still runs great.

I keep thinking I'm gonna kick myself someday for not buying that M17 for $1750
