T61p problem-Vista?

Thread Starter
I have just upgraded the CPU in my T61p from T7400 2.0GHz to a T7800 2.6GHZ. When I booted the unit and went into the BIOS, the cpu was recognized correctly. When it started to load Vista Ult. 64, it froze at the screen that has the green bar scrolling across the bottom. I did a hard shut-down, rebooted into safe mode no problem. When I went into Device Manager, the processor shows that it is the old T7400 2.0GHZ. Scan for hardware updates did nothing.
It will not boot into windows unless it is safe mode. Any ideas?

I would try re-installing the chipset driver upon successfully get into safe-mode and see. Try also setting the bios to default configuration.

I reset the BIOS to default, booted into safe mode, re-installed the chipset driver, with the same end result.
I thought it might be okay because I never got the screen to choose safe, or last known, which was the case before the BIOS reset and chipset re-install.
I also noticed, before the chipset driver re-install, that in Control Panel>System, the processor is recognized correctly. Device Manager still says it is the old proc.
Nothing else was changed, just the proc

How about getting back into safe mode again, and remove the CPU (processor) from the device manager, and let Vista try to re-install it. Hopefully it will pick up the correct one.

I un-installed the pocessor in Device Manager, scanned for hardware changes and the proc is properly recognized. It still will not boot into Vista.

We get closer. One more thing I would try, is to reset the CMOS battery. If this does not work, then a repair is in order.

I removed the cmos battery for ten minutes. I then reset the BIOS to default, booted into safe mode, re-installed the chipset driver and Intel matrix driver, checked Device Manager, properly recognized, checked control panel>system and proc is properly recognized. Boot into Vista, freezes at screen with green bar, still.
In a very short time I have become a Vista hater. :[

Actually this symptom has been reported under XP as well, after upgrading CPU - Windows hang!

Let us give it one more shot. How about swapping the ram modules around, if you have 2; and take one out at a time and see.

I have booted off the Vista install disc and am trying a system repair. If that does not work, I will try removing ram.

No luck. I removed one stick of ram, made no difference. Removed it and installed the other stick in the slot I pulled the first stick out of, no difference. Did the same thing with the other slot, no change.
The proc upgrade on a Dell M1710 with XP Pro went off without a hitch. The upgrade on the IBM T61p with Vista Ult. 64 went off without a hitch, until when Vista was suppose to give me a desktop. Maybe it is time to terminate my relationship with Vista.

I have been using the newest video driver all along:

You are correct. Sorry that we could not get you going. Should you find the solution, do come back and share. Meanwhile, we hope that some other forum users can chip in with hints and tips. I will try to dig some more around.

Try these, in Safe-Mode:

. turning off HDPS in power schemes.

. disable Active Protection System (APS)

. Boot.ini: noexecute=AlwaysOFF

I have been on the phone for the last three hours with Microsoft support. They tried numerous things, transferred me from one dept. to another, then finally told me, due to the processor upgrade, that Vista had locked-up. Nice, eh? I had to do a custom install. It loaded fine, but on the first of three reboots it was suppose to do, it has locked-up in the same spot. Awesome.
I have fired off an update to the tech I was working with and am waiting (in vain?) for the return call.
I think I am going to get them to upgrade me to XP Pro 64-bit and worry about drivers my self. I have already looked around and I do not see any problems.
I will post any updates.

It is looking like the processor might be the processor. No matter what I try, no joy. It will not install XP, flashes 'inspecting your hardware' for a second, then nada. Put in another hdd with Fedora on it, starts to load, then locks up. It seems that whenever a load is put on the proc for any amount of time, it locks up. I have not tried a LiveCD, as I can not load anything, so I think it will be a waste of time. Time to stick the old proc back in.

Too bad, may be you list out the current CPU and the one you wanted to upgrade to, sharing with us as a watch-out "not working" upgrade?

It is the processor, but not that it is not compatible. The problem is that it is a Chinese copy. When I got it, I had too many things on the go, so I just cleaned the chip in preparation for applying TIM, dropped it in the socket, locked it and installed the heatsink. When I pulled it yesterday, this is what I found:

If it was a real T7800, I know it would work in my T61p, as they were available as an option when the laptop was new.

I too upgrade the CPU of my T61p to a T7800. But as far as I know, the T61p is equipped with PM965 chipset. And the T7400 is designed for the PM945 chipset.

Asides from the comment above, my upgrade went quite well. I immedicately did a OS re-install, the Vista SP1 is now running flawlessly.

So if you decided to go with the OS reinstall, maybe try e-bay to get the Vista recovery CD/DVD. Would save you lots of the time to do the installation from nothing.
