M4400 question for you Mr Evil

Ran to the door the other day and my mouse cord was wrapped around my shoe and ripped the plug out of the USB port above the eSata port......now is feeling all loose and wobbly, actually feels like it may be just hanging on by solder.

Can't really make out enough detail in the dell service manual pic's to see how it's attached......is it clamped to the esata housing by some method,or are they attached separately to the MB?....the usb port still work's,but am avoiding using it.
The eSata port is still rock solid.

Can you shed any light on my option's [please don't say i have to buy another MB ] before I pull the palmrest off to have a look.

The plastic tab could just be broken. That happens quite a bit. If the pins themselves are still nice and straight what you can do is attempt to remove the broken tab with a pair of needlenose, put a teeny tiny bit of Super glue gel on it (the gel doesn't run) and then carefully push the plastic tab back into the port. I've never done this with a USB port, but I have done this with the data cable connection on a SATA Hard Drive with success.

Thanks for that,ya thats exactly what it's done [plastic tab] unfortunately have no idea where the tab's flown to at the moment.
Never mind, will just have to put up with 3 port's until I can find it,or get around to butchering a female usb cable.....was thinking for some reason dell was using daughterboard's for all the port's on the newest notebook's,but I'm obviously mistaken.

Bout time you got yourself one mate

I don't have one yet Gerry, but I do have service manuals. I've just been experienced in those USB ports breaking like that. My 2005FPW has a USB port break like that, and my Lian Li case did too. The monitor I just lived with since it still has three working USB ports on it, and on the desktop chassis I changed out the front USB assembly for one that added Firewire and audio.

Unfortunately, that particular port is integrated into the motherboard from looking at the pictures. If you'd broken one of the USB Ports on the right hand side those are on a seperate circuit board.

If you can find the plastic tab there's still hope. I mean if you have complete care (assuming Dell offers it on your side of the Pacific) it's covered no problem. I've replaced motherboards for the same issue but Dell never tells me if its complete care or not. Just what's broken, who to call, and where to go. Oh, they also tell me the tracking # for parts.

Oh ok,so your still considering one.....they're very nice, not built as well as the older D820/M65 though imo....never really been that anal about screen's but the LED one on this thing still blow's me away after six month's of using it.

They do offer complete care here, but I've never bought it,usually because I don't keep the notebook's for that long before getting another.
Could alway's claim on household insurance I guess.
Will probably just do what you suggested.

I'm done with considering the M4400, just can't justify the expense right now. My D820 still does all my work stuff just fine and my desktop is great for gaming. I need a new work vehicle more than anything and $2000 can get me a couple extra options. Plus, I'd also like to make my annual trip to QuakeCon this year.

Ya giving up your ex cop cruiser MrE.

I understand about saving on thing's in this climate, myself getting laid off next tuesday after 18 year's with the same company,so won't be spending on anything unnecessary except sand paper and house paint [which is],just as well I like the pc I currently have.

OT a bit - sorry to hear about the layoff GJ - PM me when you get a chance; and MrE - wish you all the best with the work vehicle.

Oh, I'm going to keep the ex-cop car around. It's paid for and runs alright. However, I need something that has a little more cargo room for large boxes and not so much room for dead-hookers. Ford's bringing the Transit Connect mini-van to the states and it seems to be a perfect fit for my line of work.

Thank's for your kind word's ofelas,no biggie, the world keep's turning,I'm able to get more work, but will utilise this little hiccup in a positive way for the moment

What sort of maximum cpu temp's do you get with your quad core ?.....highest I've seen on the X9100 is 74degC running some FEA in cosmoswork's and similarly doing dvd to mp4 conversion, other thing's like game's tend not to be utilising 100% cpu going by the lower max temperature, just wondering how well utilised four core's are currently, and what sort of temperature's your seeing.
My P8600 which came shipped with my M4400, would never go over 50degC,and was not really that much slower than the X9100 tbh 95% of the time,I very much doubt I will ever go for the fastest cpu in the future, basically,if I had my time over,I would poke that money into a decent SSD.

Your thought's?

Lol.....as long as your new transit van doesn't have a "free sweet's" sign on it....but seriously, probably a wise choice for your line of work.
