8887 video driver

Thread Starter
hey there!
i'm trying to play halo, and i get this annoying msg:

Your computer's video driver was not tested with this game. a newer version that is compatible may be available. if you wish to update your drivers, please contact your computer manufacturer for any necessary assistance.

now, i have recently reformatted, installed XP sp1, and due to my laziness, downloaded the drivers off the sagernotebooks.com archives for the 8887.
how can i get the latest compatible drivers for the 8887? i hear all this talk about driver modding or whatnot. i'm not too sure what it is.

could someone please give me a rough step-by-step guide of how to go about obtaining the latest video drivers? i'm using ati mobility radeon 9000, btw.

thanks in advance

I use Omega drivers. I had some trouble w/ the latest ones, so I went back to some of their older drivers (still much newer than Sager's). I use the ones based on the catalyst 4.2 -- http://omegacorner.com/index_ati.html. All the omega drivers will work w/ your video card, just make sure you get the ones for the proper operating system. Just download the file and follow the directions. If you download the file and it asks for Disk#2 during setup, then your download is corrupted, you'll have to re-download. These drivers are very easy to load and i have had no problems w/ them. I used to have trouble running certain games and these drivers cured my problems. Goodluck.

I'm wondering what the best way to test the different versions of the Omega drivers. My aim is to get the best performance. Is it fair to think that the drivers that produce the best results in 3DMark03 are the ones I should stick with? I asked in the Sager>General section and nobody answered It makes sense to me - graphics benchmark program testing graphics drivers...

IMHO skip the benchies (nice baseline for comparison amongst other machines) and go with what WORKS best for the games you want to play. 3.6s were VERY stable to me, 3.7 and 3.8 were crap so I went back to 3.6, then fell forward to 3.9, 4.2, and 4.4. I haven't done any of the newest games on the 4.4s yet (like COD and Far Cry) so I don't know if I'll stick with them or have to fall back a bit. You can probably get more video-specific feedback from other users on forums at ATI.com, Rage3D.com, DriverHeaven.net, and the like. Good luck!

EDIT: Obviously, drivers are not an exact science just yet, else why would they release a new version\upgrade every month or two. At least they're trying!

Finally a solid answer. Thanks dude. So far I think the 4.3 Omegas have worked best. Currently I'm running the 4.2s and they got a lower score by about 150 in 3DMark03. I'll keep em on and try out my games tomorrow.

Yeah i think u could use omega drivers for better results (sometimes they are better)

As was stated, don't put too much into the benchmarks, instead play the games you want to play and see what feels and works the best.

I've never benchmarked my machine and never plan to; but I love playing BF:Vietnam at 1600x1200x32!

Thanks. The only game I really play that doesn't run as smooth as I'd like is Far Cry. Granted, it's pretty intense, but it'd be nice if I could get a good framerate at 1280x1024.

On a seperate note, does the screen on the 8887 go up to 1600x1200? What's the point in playing a game at such a high res if the screen can't match it?

Those of us with the 16.1" UXGA on the 8887 have a native screen res of 1600x1200. With the 8887 pushing 14-15 months of road testing and rock-solid performance, I think many of us are still tickled to death with such a great laptop.

I'd have loved to get a 16.1" UXGA on my 8890

Anyone who had upgraded their 8887 to an 8890 probably has a 16.1 UXGA screen. I got one! I sent it into Sager about 6 months ago when the 8890 came out, and have never regreted it.

I was thinking of doing that. Wonder now that the 8890 is dead if they'll still do it, maybe even cheaper with leftover parts. Only prob I had then and now is that my 8887 is painted. I was thinking of going two-tone, or they might match-paint. I'll prolly just wait another 6-12 months and go for whatever is super by then.

I believe that I read recently in the forum that they intend to offer the upgrade path from an 8887 to a 8890 for the present time.

I bought my 8887 just over a year ago and talked to Sager about upgrading it about a month ago. They will do it but won't buy back any parts if they are over a year old (I missed it by 1.5 weeks). Upgrading will also void any extended warrantee. For what I wanted to upgrade, I could almost buy a new 8890 and with no buy-back on anything and voiding my extended warrantee, I'm sticking with my 8887 for the time being.

My 8887-X is still just fine for me! I'll get a new machine one day, but I'll get the max use out of this one first...

It'd be different if I wasn't married w/ kids, but that's a whole 'nuther subject.
