And that's fine if you don't have it on your favorites bar. I want to know what the majority feels.

I think, with all do respect, you may have missed his point.
First I disgree that its "fine" if he doesnt have it, and here's why:
Lets say the poll for the animation is 70% yeahy 30% neay

the 70% yeahy will still be happy with a non-animated one (or completely oblivious as noone as it has made much a fuss using someone elses since boards inception) and you risk annoying and driving away the other 30% if it stays.
Where as is u use a non aminated one it might not be AS pleasing to the 70% but you likely wont alienate anyone.
My (and prolly tridge's too) favicon only toolbar is the launchpad to our entire browser and is a very important feature/piece of real-estate- i.e. you would prolly want to maximize the favicons inclusion there.

Im worried that with the poll, we are gunna get a bunch of votes from people who may have never noticed before or cared but find the animation cool not realizing the negative implications of using it.

I think its cool as hell and great work, just not a great favicon for something we would try to target into peoples bookmarks toolbar.

popularity is not necessarily the best indication of usability/functionality, especially seeing as the bulk of this sites traffic is from non registered users who prolly bookmark this site and cant vote anyway.

If favicon enabled toolbars didnt exist Id vote for the animated one, but thats not the paradigm.

Keep in mind that NO major site uses an animated favicon, its not cuz they dont know how to make them! its a functionality issue of annoying people like me n tridge and risk losing our bookmarks/page hits/etc and we may be a minority 10% 40% who knows but there is no sense in appealing to a bunch of people who never cared in the first place with the poll as the determinant.

(Although I find nothing wrong with the pole in and of itsel, Djembe's ico is off the hook, and he should get aCcolades accordingly) just not the determinant
It may have been better to waited for 5 or 10 distinct entries and submitted them for Poll in a higher traffic section, heck Ive been here 5 years 2k+ posts and never been in off topic, we prolly can get a better sample if poll sits in a more prominent section (news?)

Just an observation (and suggestion) here, can we either make it

. all capital letters,

. or N and B and F in cap with darker colouring

At the moment, it kinda mixes and matches between caps and non-caps, or is it just my eyes?

cheers ...

Typical NBF admin mindset.

The reason for putting the poll in Off-Topic is simply that it IS off-topic. It's not related to notebook computers in any way whatsoever and thus shouldn't be in an on-topic area. Also, most of the most prolific members and those who have been around the longest frequent OT. Members in OT also express a very wide range of opinions. For those reasons, I think Off-Topic is a good representation of the opinions of forum members as a whole.

While Steve's response wasn't the most tactful, neither was your statement that you had just taken NBF from your favorites and (by implication) were considering never coming back. That's not useful criticism. It's similar to me going to a friend's house, seeing that they'd rearranged the furniture, and telling them the rearrangement was so bad I'd never visit again.

Useful criticism would be explaining why you don't like it, offering a suggestion or two on how to improve it, and giving us time to look into it and see if there are others who share the same opinions.

I see a bit of an attitude with your post...The fact you Italicized and Bolded "you" put "attitude" in your own post.

I'm not going to argue over it because I know what will happen.

I took it off my favbar because the scrolling was annoying, I would suggest making it static so that it is not annoying.

Thank you. Please also vote in the poll, if you haven't already. Steve just put up an NBF-wide announcement about the Favicon Poll, so we'll have an idea of the overall impact soon.

No I was merely saying if you don't want to put it in your bookmarks toolbar that's fine. You can do whatever you want.

I don't know why you're arguing this with me. I put it to a vote to see if people shared similar complaints as you.

I stole Djembe's un-animated it, made some VERY subtle changes and this is what I got:

My thoughts too, dont get me wrong the laptop tie-in is a good idea but doesnt execute as well for some reason..... again why I prefer the bold branding of my second submission.

Again I would prefer we saw some more and varied entrants b4 making a decision, all submissions so far have revoled around 2 designs, and there is nothing that says NBF icon needs to have its name in any way represented in the favicon (see googles new favicon) and while a laptop based favicon seems like the obvious choice it rather elementary and lacks panache.

We'll see how the poll goes, its not really very scientific sampling, but given me tridge and another guy all have the same objection so far I dont know what percentage of votes proves our point?

tough crowd. how bout some more suggestions? I know you've put up several arch, but if we're gonna get a good one people will have to make/submit them. I'd do some more (and still may) but I'm down to only my 'off hand' fer several weeks and graphics work is really tedious right now (left handed).

Seems like a good idea. I'm totally open to it. I'd love to see some new entries by people.
