e1705 internal sd card not recognized

Hoperfully somebody can help me out, I am completely out of ideas.

I have an E1705 and am running Vista Home Premium. There are two issues and are most likely related.

1) My internal xD card reader keeps asking me to format a card even though nothing is inserted in there, and to be quite honest I can't even remember the last time I used an xD card.

I have tried uninstalling the device/driver and reinstalling using the most recent as well as even older drivers with no luck.

2) Secondly, when i DO insert a card in there (an SD card), it isn't recognized whatsoever. No auto-prompts come up, nothing is visible in My Computer or Disk Manager.

Like above, I have tried uninstalling the device/driver and reinstalling using the most recent as well as even older drivers with no luck again.

Does anybody have any thoughts or ideas as to what I could do to resolve this issue? I would like to use this device for ReadyBoost in Vista and having to use a USB key sticking out the back or side is very inconvient and troublesome to me.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Very interesting. There's no card inserted, but Windows asks you to format it. What happens if you say ok?

I click "format disk" and brings up the screen to format it, just to see what would happen, I click "start". It then gives me an error reading "Windows was unable to complete the format." Then brings up another error saying "Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly, make sure that the disk is not read-only, and then try again. For more information, search Help for read-only files and how to change them."

I would try to uninstall the device within device manager first, let Vista search, find an reinstall it.

cheers ...

Chipset driver? then a repair installation if that does not work. Eventually it could be a hardware failure.

I don't have a fix, but want to mention that I have similar problem under WinXP Pro SP3. It sometimes thinks that there is an xD card, but doesn't ask me to format it. SDHC card i plug-in works great (except slow) and it seems to occasionally corrupt file system and I must recover the files with proper software. And on Ubuntu 8.10 it works fast and no ghost xD cards appear, so maybe that is not hardware related?
I got around it by using a $5 multi-card-reader from ebay. It also works two times faster.

Also just a hint, try to look inside the card reader with a flashlight and make sure there are no bent pins (I had this problem with Acer notebook). And try searching on Dell's website for various drivers, just look for "ricoh".

Good luck!

thanks for the advice, however this happens without a card even being inserted, when i first boot up it reads like there is a card in there that needs to be formatted. i've tried clean installs on both xp and vista with several variations of newest and oldest ricoh drivers. it doesn't recognize any cards when placed in the slot and I also checked for bent pins at your suggestion (didn't think about that), but looks all good to me. i've searched far and wide and can't find any similar situations. i tried checking dell for support with no luck as well and since i'm well out of warranty i can't talk to them without paying so looks like i'm screwed.

anybody know of a diagnostic test for internal card readers to see if it's a hardware failure? or should i just assume it is because i've tried everything else?
