HP Compaq nx7400... strange AC adapter problem

Ok, I have tried to ask for help with regards to my laptop. But, so far, my laptop is still not working. So I decided to ask for your expert help.

I have an HP Compaq nx7400. I've had it for over 3 years now. I've never changed its battery ever since I bought it.

Specs: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en...5-3254425.html

Over the past few weeks, I've been having an unusual problem. Whenever I plug the AC adapter to my laptop, the whole laptop performance - from the second I switch it on - is very slow. The moment I pull the AC adapter from the laptop, it instantly operates at a normal and fast speed again!

I figured that it must have been a problem with the AC adapter (it's had its fair share of use - being swung around and dragged to lectures...). So I ordered another one off Ebay. Today, I got the new adapter and when I plugged it in, the laptop only went on AC power. It worked fine - fast as normal. However, it was not charging - just on AC power. I am starting to question if the adapter was really as "genuine" like it was advertised on eBay. But anyway... after about 4 hours with the new adapter on AC power, it stopped recognizing the battery altogether and alerted me with a Critical Battery sign. Of course, a few minutes later, it went dead on me - the laptop switched off. It was as if I removed the AC adapter myself, only I hadn't. Now, I am trying to plug it in again (the new one), to see if it will be able to power up again and it just won't respond at all.

On the other hand, when I put the old AC adapter, the laptop switches on but doesn't charge. Again, it is extremely slow with the adapter on, and fast when I pull the wire out. Only for a minute or so until it dies on me again...

Could it be that my laptop's battery needs a replacement?

I would be really glad to read any of your suggestions. Thanks for reading.

. I personally always stay away from 3rd party ac adapter. Never had consistent good experiences with it

. And yes, it does sound like your battery is failing as well.

cheers ...

Yes, I know what you mean. After the first adapter, I bought a replacement for it from the HP suppliers. But it had only lasted me a short time. After four months, it started playing around and causing problems. So after it started giving me this low performance problem, I just said scrap it all - that adapter costs too much. I'm off to eBay. I found it a bit strange that it was quite cheaper. I must admit.

Thanks for your input. I'll keep checking the thread and then have a friend look at it again.

hello,
I have a similar problem. When I switch off my ac adapter of my nx9420, the performance is much slower. When I used a cheap chinese replacement, after few month, it was nearly impossible to work, as slow it was. Then I bought a new orignal HP adapter (90 W), and the performance was better, but still worser then without adapter (c.8x). I bought a new adapter again (HP) but with 135W. Performance now is a little bit better but still worse.
I found a threat about this problem:

It seems to be a problem of wrong Voltage of the adapter.
But I must say, that I have also a replacement batterie (charging is ok).
that is really bad, because I spend much money for new replacement charger without solving the problem
Maybe I try to repair the charcher by myself...

regards
uv.

Take the battery out and run it on AC only and see if it works ok... Also see if you can disable speed stepping for the CPU in the BIOS... Another thing to do is to set eveything to 'always on' in the power management for windows...
