P6831-FX power shuts off

Has anyone else experienced this? i've owned the laptop for about 6 months now, and this started randomly occurring about a month ago. The power just completely shuts off at random times (irrespective to power usage). It's probably either the power supply or the motherboard.

Does it have a battery?
Check that the vents aren't covered and that the fan is still spinning inside the laptop. If it has a battery and still shuts off then it might be the mobo.

thanks.. yeah, the battery is in. it's probably a mobo issue.

i also called gateway for the recovery disc, and they sent it to me.. but the disc doesn't load properly. since i was a fool and delete the recovery software, i'm kind of stuck here. guess i might have to RMA this laptop.

. Can you expand the "doesn't load properly"? Bad disks? Ask Gateway to send out replacements if this is the case?

. Random shut down is mostly being contributed by overheating of some sort. Were you working on a hard surface when this happened? Try visually check if the vents are clogged?

cheers ...

This series laptop has a known issue of overheating (just not enough ventilation for the fans to do a good enough job)

Especially if it just looks like it shuts down, but it should still be powered on when it does this. Even with clear vents it may still happen. Easiest way to test it, put a small book under the battery in the back to elevate it about 1/2 inch or so. (DVD movie case works well). Run it and see if it does it while elevated.
