just a quick poll because i'm curious - what file system (or systems) do you use, and why?

i'm currently using ext3 on / and /home; i'm considering switching to a soup of xfs (/, /home) and reiserfs (/var) when i migrate to arch.

and yes, i am bored.

24 views and one vote. I don't have a preference, its all just theory to me. In practice, I doubt I would notice a difference since I'm not running a specialized environment.

Well I am two of those views now, but really it comes down to what I am doing. As a general purpose system ext3(And most likely ext4) will be my FS of choice. But for specialized things I may look at XFS or even other FSs.

I typically leave it at whatever the default is for the distro I'm using, thus I currently use EXT3 (debian and ubuntu), but I used to use ReiserFS when I ran Slackware. Honestly, can't tell a bit of difference.

i use ext3 for / and reiserfs for /home...
my boss asks me to try out ext4 but my machine needs to be up and running all of the time so i can't risk using ext4 on Mandriva 2009.1

I'm using ext2 for my /boot partition, and ext4 for the rest and have been doing so for about a year and a half. I'm currently running Gentoo Linux testing (~86) with Xorg-1.7.6, KDE-4.4.2 and Zen-kernel-2.33-p1.

ext3 on netbooks with a solid state drive... Otherwise I use ext4 as I generally let the ubuntu or other linux install get on with it at default... I am not running any special environments, so it doesn't really matter...

eventually Btrfs is going to be the file system to use going forward. its not ready for everyday use yet though

Use EXT4 at the moment, until something newer comes along.
