I have an HP dv6809 and it has a wireless G connection, the rest of my network is wireless N. Could anybody point me in the right direction for a new N adapter that will be compatible with the notebook? Thanks in advance!

What card brand do you have in at the moment? You can look into their product line and see if there is an N card availble.

it's a broadcom card, i think the laptop will also accept Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5300 Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100 Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965 Intel PRO/Wireless. i guess i was more or less asking if anybody had any suggestions or had done this (or if anybody's came stock).

thanks for your help though.

I replaced many wireless cards on my HPs. I always look for small footprint cards, 1/2 the size of the normal ones.

Intel cards are good. I see no issue with you installing one, just a note that I always intall the drivers first, before replacing the card.

bought a half size card, turns out the dv6809 needs a full size, oh well

Half size cards are only in size. Difference in the connector?

connectors are fine, but the card is half the size of the card i am replacing and there is no way to secure it with the screws b/c it is half the size.

I see. Normally the cards are secured via the latches on the sides, just like memory modules.

Would you share some pics?

it won't even fit my dell e1705. there are latches on the top instead of screws but it is basically the same scenario.

So, the only thing that concern you is the screws to the chassis? Seeing that the 1/2 hard does not touch the board, and the connector is firm, have you tried the card without the screws?

i placed the card in there with connectors on and it doesn't seem firm at all, almost dangling around. i'll try it in there but i just feel uncomfortable without it locking in there somehow.

If you feel uncomfortable, just get another full size card. See first if you can trade it back.

At least see how the system reacts with this higher performance card, if the signals improved or not.

well it is now secured via some slight electrical tape, can't really tell the difference in speed, not sure if that's b/c the other laptop on my network is still wireless g.

To be fair, the N dingy is not yet being standardized - this coming November hopefully. And with all I have read, it only improves the signals, but not the range, nor the transfer. I am quite happy if it says connecting at 54mbps and steady on my comps. Issue is that the wireless signals keep re-negotiating (behind our backs) in order to hold the connection stable.
