E1705 Did Dell just plain lie to me?

I don't want anyone here to feel defensive, but can anyone tell me if they experienced this too and how I wrap my mind around this?

I have a E1705 that I got almost 2 years ago and I've gone through agony in regards to what I have always thought was a limitation, that my pc could not handle or even take more than 2 gb of RAM. I was furious with Dell after I purchased the machine and realized my mistake, but my situation required that I had to keep the pc. Anyway, I would call back every once in a while to see if my pc really couldn't take more than 2 gigs of RAM, and they all said it was limited to 2, period!

Now I'm reading forum posts over here left and right saying my pc can take 2x2 and that it might only recognize 3.25??? Some even report that with Vista 64 I might get to use all 4 gb.

I'm furious. I even spoke to Dell about this last week (before I discovered this forum) and they told me once again that I can't upgrade my ram any more, not with outside products, nothing.

So did DELL just flat out lie to me over and over again?

Can someone explain to me why I have lived with this ballony limitation for almost 2 years?

So all I need is something like this: "G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory - Retail"????

Thanks all,

Keith

They definitely misinformed you. The 9300/XPS2 were limited to 2 GB due to the chipset. The 9400/XPS M1710 are limited to 4 GB due to 32-bit chipset but its only 3.25 GB effective because of memory mapped I/O. So, whatever OS you use, no matter what it reports, it will give you only 3.25 GB effective. And that RAM you chose looks fine.

Was my experience common?

Hmm, I'm not sure if I would go as far as to say that. But I tend to take all of Dell Supports with a grain of salt. They screwed up pretty big this time though as this was a question they definitely should have gotten right (I'm pretty sure they even had 4 GB listed on their site at one point). The way I see it, if I can get a consensus here on an issue, it will always carry more weight than Dell support.

Even Dells documents state a 2 GB limit for the 9400, but we all know here from experiance that x 2 GB works fine.

I have an Inspiron 9400 with 2 x 2GB and Windows recognizes 3.25GB just fine.

my dell xps m1710 uses all 4gigs and even shows it as 4 gigs.

no the Windows patch shows 4 Gb, but the chipset still only has 3.25 GB usuable

the M1710 still has a 32 bit chipset, even with a 64 Bit CPU and OS on a m1710 your are limited to the 3.35 Gb usuable. and you can not put more than 4 GB in it.
