Yeah so I have a lot of stuff in off topic like most normal users. I am not happy nor comfortable with it being made public so anyone on google can find it.

Thoughts?

agreed

I'm still working out the best mechanism for you to (slowly) auto-nuke every post of yours in the RET/OT....

In case you ever need it, of course.

The easiest way (to develop) would be, I think, to make a firefox greasemonkey script to do this job....

Now that's more like it!

Keep in mind that this script would, effectively, be barely faster than you yourself would be in doing this. The difference being that you don't personally have to sit there and click button after button for hours on end....

Wow.

I think that many of us who post regularly in OT have done so with the understanding that we were in a private section and therefore have posted personal information which we may not have had the forum been public. To turn around and change the rules mid game leave a number of us in a situation where information we thought would be [partially] confidential is now to be made available for the entire world to see.

Would there be a way to compromise, and say create two sub forums in OT; one restricted one that will house all threads created before today, which would be also be restricted from having new threads created, and one open one that starts as of today? This would at least solve the problem of protecting semi-private info (which would be impossible for any of us to go edit) from becoming freely available.

Another thing to point out is that there are quite a few threads in OT that would not exactly be considered PG. Are we sure that we want the general public to see these threads?

HAHAHAHA!!! That's an effed up move by NBF.

I just took a closer look at the greasemonkey script program homepage....yes, definitely it can do this. Matter of fact, I might be able to find and modify a pre-existing script among that huge list....

OKAY!

we've discussed it further, and what we will be doing is splitting Off-Topic into two parts, public facing and the current private setting. good discussions that would draw traffic will go into the public one, and then everything else will remain in the private one

G5 I will still take that script.

I voted for private. I can't think of anything I've posted in OT that I would object to the general public seeing that I don't mind NBF members seeing, hell, you are all just a collection of strange internet users to me anyway and the act of signing up to be a NBF member does not in and of itself make someone trustworthy.

Making it private keep the content out of the eyes of the lurkers who'll never sign up. Leave them to lurk the public content of computer subject matter, make OT private and make it well known that it's private, so maybe some of the lurkers will sign up and start to participate.

But if anyone is worried about having posted info in OT that makes them vulnerable if made public shouldn't be posting that kind of info on any web forum in the first place, public or private.
