This is a good solution.

very true, but at the same time i look at the posts in OT like a coffee shop, im chatting with my friends, if someone else in the shop hears me i cant really stop that, but at the same time i might not say all of that on national television which is the equal of google.

perhaps the discussion should have gone on before just making a change of that nature?

as far as this new change, are we going to see the majority of posts remain in the private? or is it all gonna be public with only a few exceptions? who decides what goes private vs what goes public?

more information on that forthcoming

I think the private section should be 18+... an uncensored section if you well. To gain access members would need to e-mail an admin.

That works for me. Also it would not be that much of an inconvienience as I would believe most off topic peeps are 18+. Would we grandfather in the one or 2 current OT'sters who would be affected? (ie. Suddstee)

Just have to provide our credit card number for age verification right?

I guess I figured there were other ways of keeping the crawlers from cataloging certain sections, but I have never admin'd a vBulletin, so I freely confess ignorance.

uh oh, now google will broadcast my confession.

I'm not a fixture here like some, and often don't pay that much attention, hadn't noticed OT was now open. Are there any other similar things we didn't know about that we can also object to?
Personally I try not to post anything that I dont want a person doing a thorough background check, say for a Fire Dept. job, to find.

That being said I always thought that the OT was private (similar to another forum I am apart of where the Team Room is private) and the fact that it is not is..........unsettling. Knowing (or not know) that this was done without any warning will give me pause now before I hit that 'Post' button.

I tend to agree, it should not be a general publc access forum, only members

Why exactly is Off-Topic being used as a way to draw traffic anyways? This is a laptop forum; you'd think that would be the draw and not the off-topic section. It seems counter-productive to do this.

My take is that it has more changeovers in posts/threads, making the section more lively and active. No dead pauses in between posts.
Make the Rep threads public if you want to show activity I say. Personally, I have never posted anything I wouldn't want public, however, I read dozens of post here each week that probably shouldn't be made public.

Let's make it private again.

I prefer the approach of analysing as why the REP threads have (and attract) activities, and use this finding to implement in the other sections/threads instead.

cheers ...

+1. Afterall folks, this is the effen interweb. Just how 'private' do you think making OT private would actually make it? Any of you guys use the same screen name in other forums?

PS: I agree with the need to log-in to view OT, as that prevents the casual user from seeing it...
