CPU Upgrade/Replacement on a105-S4001

Hello All,

I am new to your forum. I recently aquired a Toshiba A105-S4001 off Criagslist for a crazy low price.
The 1st thing I did was cram 4 GB of RAM in it. Then I upgraded the 60 GB 5400 RPM drive with a 80GB 7200 RPM 16 MB Cache Drive, not much more room but it is a FASTER drive. Next I installed VISTA and all the required drivers. The ones that were not installed through MS update, I got from the Toshiba Website.
The only one showing the “?” in device manager is the driver for the Password Utiltiy. I know whwere to get it, just have not done so yet.

Next I would like to replace the T1300 “Yonah” Core Solo with a Core Duo. I as far as I can tell, the T2500 Yonah Core Duo will work. The thing that is confusing the the tpe of Socket this machine has. CPUZ shows it as the, “Socket 479 mPGA. “ I take this to mean it is the “PIN” type socket and not the “BALL” type socket. Everest shows it as, “Package Type 479 Ball uFCBGA / 478 Pin uFCPGA” So I ama little confused.

Does anone here know which socket this motherboard has? I know it is the CAPELL VALLEY(NAPA) Motherboard.

I have found an Intel Core Duo T2500 Yonah 2.0GHz 2 mb cache CPU on eBay. It says it is SL8VT. I am not sure what that means. Does it have to do with whether it is the “BGA” package or the “PGA” package?

And last, how hard is it to replace the cpu? Do I just need to remove the Keyboard to get access to the CPU and Heatsink?

I really appreciate any feedback you may have to offer.

Thank You,

FFL

This should help with your last question. There are three pages of thumbnails and instructions. You may not have to do every step, see which ones you have to make.
I would guess and say it will be more that just the keyboard. Maybe the outer cover as well.

Thank You for your reply.

I have visited irisvista.com and have it bookmarked.

It's hard to tell from the PICS exactly which steps I need to do. I was hoping someone who has done the upgrade could shed a little light for me.

I'll hope for more replies.

regards,

FFL

The link from Saugen does show the detailed steps to get full access to your CPU for upgrade. There are 3 pages in total.

Make sure that you have new thermal paste on hand. I recommend AS5 or LiquidPro.

Watch carefully the screws sequence when removing the heatsink.

Never overtighten the heatsink screws when reinstalling it.

So to get access to the CPU I have to remove all that is shown in the Tutorial? Starting on Page 1 at the bottom of the laptop?

One can not gain access by starting at the top and simply removing the keyboard?

I was hoping it would be easier, however, I will follow the guides.

I have Arctic Silver on hand that I use on my desktops.

Thank You qhn, for the reply.

Now does anyone know what "Socket" this machines has?

Regards,

FFL

In answer to more of your disassembly queries:

They all appear to be 478 pin. Try googling, that's how we come up with answers for questions like yours

I have Googled, extensively. That is how I found this forum. But I have not come up with what the Socket is for sure.

I believe it is what CPU-Z shows, the "Socket 479 mPGA." Meaning is a "PIN" type Socket and not the "BALL" type.

The 479 vs 478 is confusing a little.I was just hoping someone had been under the hood of this particular model and could give some concrete info.

Thanks for the link to "Laptoprepairco" that is one I had not found. I'll spend some time there and see what I can learn.

Thanks for the links.

I've been looking for a T7600 at a reasonable price myself for my old Sony. Best price to find is a T7400 at about $80

Uhh.  Did my previous user account get banned/purged without warning?

I'm the guy who bought the T7600 for a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4201 and a pile of broken Gateway laptops.

If I broke a rule and got booted, a warning or explanation does wonders.  I’ve never been purged from a forum in 13 years of Intarwebing.  What gives?

My CPU is a neuralnet processor... a learning computer.

That's what I was wondering.  My username would have either been JayLo or Looftie.

I had a few posts on here about the T7600 processor and whether or not it would work in an A105-S4201.

After that I whored the thread a bit about 26 used Gateway laptops I scored for a very great price (half of which are Core/Core2 machines).  I only mentioned them because three of them ended up have the very processor I was looking for T7400/T7600, which of course I found out after buying a T7600 on ebay for $130.
