where the what the fan speed bios what dont have that option inmy bios ao7

Just by overclocking to 3ghz via the overclock settings in the bios. Unless you can trick your cpu / bios into thinking you have the g version. It goes to that speed automatically and doesn't stop unless I use speedfan.

So opening it up helped a lot. Next step is maybe apply arctic 5. ( thats taking out the left heat sink ?) As someone said this would not affect the warranty?

Anyways, it has been opened twice before by techs, changed lcd and fan.

Got some months left on nbd service and consumer warranty.
What they don't know doesn't void it :P It's fairly beneficial to do. I got a few C drop with AS5. There's lots of guides on here to do it. Just be forewarned if you want to do it to the gpu, you'll need a T-8 (torx bit) screwdriver.

How are you getting to those temps, my m1710 shuts off after it hits past 96 degrees.
You talking about the low idle temps or the high gaming temps? I'm slightly confused.

Hey all

After taking the dive and actually cleaning out everything (no AS5 on hand atm), my temps are still reaching 105 C after 30 minutes of gaming (Oblivion, Supreme Commander, even SW: KOTOR gets up into the 90s), staying steady with the fans on high in the low 100s until eventually shutting down. So, I'm left with contacting Dell with the issue.

I just tried to connect via Dell Chat and got this message:

"This product model is not supported by Chat. Please call 800-822-8965 for any support related to this product."

Are the tech support people on the other end no longer required to be familiar with the M1710? Has Dell just abandoned those of us who still have the M1710, forcing us to call or e-mail (I've done the latter as I really don't feel like putting up with them over the phone)?

Sad panda...

Edit: Dell's e-mail system doesn't seem to be working for me (it also says that for more complex problems than those listed, use the phone system). Guess I'll be calling them...

Evolution my good man, evolution. They need to "outsource" the support of previous models. To NBF here

cheers ...

Not evolution, i call it profit motivation by forcing customer into new product by selling them part a rediculous price ie: 7950gtx on ebay 400$ full m1710 for 900$.

Have the onsite come over to replace the fan and heatsink

Always take advantage of your extended warranty...you should take care that heat issue as quickly as possible otherwise it can kill the motherboad or cpu itself.

When nothing else cools it down it is because the heatsink needs to be replaced -on most laptops.

good luck.

What's your IDLE temps, rpms, and clocks like? That'll tell me if it's a driver / game issue or an actual heatpipe issue (which is unfixable from my knowledge sorry )

My idle temps are right around 60 C as I currently have Rivatuner downclocking the GPU to 100/100 at 2D.

Spent about 90 minutes on the phone with Dell earlier. I'm supposed to get a call from the tech in the next couple days to schedule an appointment to replace the heatsink, fans, and GPU. We'll see if that fixes everything... somehow I doubt these refurbished cards are going to last.
wow. probly heatsink has an issue or a pathetic gpu fan then hope it works!
although to note mine downclocked to 45/60 is running now at 54C while clean. And at your speeds 57C. 3 degrees difference? in 23C environment.
Not much difference I think.

Thread Starter
My idle core temps are right now 40-55 when browsing, gpu at 54-63c. Tested hwmonitor overnight at idle and min cores was 37c and max 77c. Gpu at min 51c and max 69c.

Some light browsing brings temperature up to above 60c.

Sounds like the voltage is never going down or that thermal paste is pretty dry. or both. I flashed my card to force it to use a lower voltage at idle using nbitor.

Your idles really aren't bad though. just if it goes above 95 thats bad.

They need to take time giving the software dev a bit more time to catch up with new hardware at every corner. Hopefully with the way world economy going at the moment, consumers will be a bit more choosy (aka more careful)

cheers ...

Well, after the GPU, heatsink, and fans were replaced by the tech last Saturday (awesome tech BTW; finished in 10 minutes flat while still being careful with the hardware), I'm seeing max temps in the 90s with this card, idling at around 60 C with the 2D settings downclocked again to 100/100.

Called Dell earlier and they're sending a box for me to ship my system to a depot for assessment. The only problem is I'll be without a working laptop for a month (the estimate they gave me). In the meantime right around when they quoted me receiving a potential replacement, I'm moving from New York to Georgia. During this time I won't have any stable mailing address (this will be at the end of June until an indeterminate amount of time i.e. until I find a house in Georgia).

Does anyone know the normal turnaround time for this kind of thing? I've read stories with time frames ranging from a couple weeks to several months. Assuming they don't try to send me a downgrade for a replacement, how long should I expect to wait? They estimated a month from the day I send my system in.

Any info is greatly appreciated!
