My LCD on my i9300 is crapping out...other problems

I guess this is where we now post for peer help as I no longer see any help forums. Last Friday as I was finishing surfing, I noticed a thin yellow line (about 1 pixel wide) on my LCD panel running the entire length vertically (I originally wrote horizontally) about 1 centimeter from the far right side. The line is only noticeable against a colored background and is invisible against white.

At first I thought maybe my video card was crapping out on me. So I replaced it with my old 6800 go, but no luck the line was still there. Then I reinstalled my 7800 but now I've got another problem too as my keyboard is now freaking on me as the letters -w-, -s-, -x- and number 2 are no longer working.

The keyboard will be an easy problem to solve as I've seen them around for under 20 bucks. However, before I go and shell out a couple of hundred for another LCD, I've got a few questions.

1) If I replace my LCD with a less expensive lower resolution model (current is 1920 - 1200) do I have to replace the inverter too?

2) Is there something I'm overlooking that could be causing the line besides the LCD?

Any help would be appreciated. TIA

You can replace the Screen with most other 17 inch displays, and you should re-use your inverter for best results. - not all inverters are the same.

the line could also be a problem with the video cable, but considering this has been a well documented problem with the 9300 it is most likely the screen.

I'm hoping your keyboard issue is just the keyboard because the only other culprit is the mobo.

Recheck your keyboard connection, hopefully that it was just being not sitting in right, with all the removing and replacing.

cheers ...

That makes two of us. (Un)Fortunately, I've had a few keyboards fail on me over the years, and this has all of the symptoms. The keys feel and sound funny all of a sudden...etc. Trying to find one here locally in Miami is turning out to be difficult. They all want to repair for over a hundred... none want to sell just the part....

Back to my first question... do I need to get a new/ different inverter if I change to a lower resolution screen or will the one I have work with a different one? TIA

I'll keep trying and keep posted

If you can get a screen from the 9300 then there should be no inverter swap necessary. It really has nothing to do with the resolution and everything to do with what machine its from.

I also have a pristine XPS2 keyboard at my house if you want to buy it. I have no use for it. I'd imagine it would be just as cheap to get it from ebay or the FS section here though.

Thanks ZZ but I got the keyboard situation fixed this afternoon. I went to eBay and used the Sort by "Distance: nearest first" button and found a couple listed nearby. I found a nice guy who sold me a good condition used one and insisted on installing it for me for only 10 bucks, total!!!! You can't beat that with a stick!!!

This guy works out of his house salvaging used laptops of all makes and selling the parts on eBay, he says he deals primarily with Latin American customers where I guess this type of market is stronger. He said he'd keep a look out for a replacement screen for me.

I tell you guys getting my own machine back up and running is awesome and a great relief. I don't know about you folks, but having to use public machines like at the library or an internet cafe' bugs the heck out of me. To me it's like having to take a dump at a ball game or movie, it's something you've got to do in an emergency, but would much rather do at home.

I'll live with the line on the screen for a while, but in the meantime it's great to be up and running again!!!!

Life is good!!!!!
