Partitioning Problem!!

Thread Starter
I'm just bought an Acer Aspire 6930G and here's how my partitions look now:

Now I want to divide the partition C:\ into 3 partitions as following :

1.Windows Vista (The Current One and must stay as it is now)
2.Windows XP (Want to install it and use it as my 2nd OS)
3.Accessories (Just Some Files)

I've already tried shrinking them but failed as there's already 4 partitions exist in my HD!! So my questions is how can I create the partitions as the way I want it??

NOTE : I Haven't made backup dvd's yet so the current windows musn't be harmed and New partition should allow me to install new windows (XP) and use it as my 2nd OS

+1

And I take the lady's remark seriously. No fun in testing out un-needed "pains"

Assuming every primary partition is an extended partition, you can just shrink partitions and merge unallocated space among the 4 primary partitions and create logical partitions inside of them. The sizes of these partitions is up to you.

Well I dont see any problem doing it cuz I'm keeping a working OS beside XP (The Current Vista) Besides I've already manage most of the drivers for XP!!

NOTE : Now as u guys said don't do it....So I heard but I still need to partition it so tell me the way to partition it as the way I want in my first post!!

. Before anything, defrag the drive first (my fav).

. Within Vista, use its disk management and shrink it to the size you need, leaving the rest.

. Boot the system with XP disk, install and choose the rest of the disk, here you can specify the size for your XP.

. after successfully dual booting, go back to Vista and partition the other free space, naming it to data or whatever.

These are steps I made on my comps.

Would you mind sharing where you get all your XP drivers for other NBF users?

Ok I can't do what ur reference say I mean I can Shrink Volume properly but can't make A new volume out of it.

Here's Link Of The Failure Check it out and u'll understand :

That is correct. You cannot make a new volume out within Vista

That is why, I recommend finishing the shrinking, then boot the system with XP disk to perform an install, to pick up the space left on the drive. That is where your new volume will be.

Just use a boot-time partitioner like gparted or like qhn said, the partitioner on the XP CD. I never partition my drive inside an OS.

The idea in my 4th post pretty much sums up everything you will have to do. There is a slight risk when shrinking partitions but its up to you to decide whether to make backups or not. Also, realize that XP will rewrite to MBR to make only itself bootable. You're gonna have to fix that.

What do u mean bythis "XP will rewrite to MBR to make only itself bootable. You're gonna have to fix that" I mean if I partition it as qhn said in 6th post, install XP as primary OS and then install vista again in different drive my vista will not work???

It would work. zzpulp statement is true in many scenarios where Vista is primary, then XP afterward. You have the other way around, so it will be fine.

Didn't read the post. If you install Vista after XP, everything will be ok.

What problem will it create if I install Vista first and Xp 2nd?? And what is the solution?? (just asking)
Well, the solution depends on what you want to use as your bootloader. I use Linux so I have Grub as my bootloader and the problem is easy to solve with it. However, you would need to solve the problem by re-enabling the Vista bootloader. There's probably tons of guides online for this.

Of course, since you're installing Vista after XP then you will be fine.

2day I tried to install XP but after it started a few sec later a blue error screen came saying : "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"

Here's the full form of what it says in the blue screen and It occurs in the beginning of installing windows (in the first screen when it says Windows is strarting setup or something)

The problem has detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage on your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow this steps:

Check for viruses in your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers.Check your hard drives to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical Information :

*** STOP : 0x0000007B (0XF78D2524,0XC0000034,0X00000000,0X00000000)

Googled your error message and got this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324103

You might have a boot sector virus. Do you run an up to date antivirus program????
Do an on-line virus scan to make sure you dont. http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner. There are other free online virus scanners like Housecall.

It wasn't a virus...I found out that my HD was in AHCI mode so I just change it to IDE and now it's working again!! thanks anyway....
