Wireless Internet SLOW!

well my internet is really slow at home ever since i got a new computer. my old computer was fine and my roommate's computers are fine as well. here's the details:

5 year old computer - internet speed fine (never did a speed test before i got rid of it)

new HP Pavillion Vista 4gig ram, 2.2ghz - extremely slow at home. pages fail to load, and take minutes sometimes. connection strength to router is excellent. However, internet speed is lightning fast when connected on my schools campus.

speedtest at home - 1mbps/.4mbps, 61ms ping

speedtest at school - 13.92mbps/15.66mbps, 15ms ping

anyone know what the hell is going on?

no clue. is that a common problem?

Common? Not sure, but many routers do need some firmware updates, in order to support Vista machines.

Your comp performs well at school, and not at home; the immediate difference is the router.

Actually, the immediate difference is the network. Could you give a speedtest result from a computer that's getting a faster internet speed at your house? Otherwise, you'll be comparing totally different things.

I thought about the internet speed, but OP mentioned that an old comp at home works fine, only with the new notebook

also what signal strength are you getting at home? the lower the signal strength the slower the connection due to retries and dropped packets. Check if your wifi card is set to a wireless mode that your router at home may not be able to support such as Wireless G or N mode. Also some turbo modes can cause issues if the equipment are not from the same manufacturer. Wifi Card / Router

On the thoughts of Djembe? If all else is equal you look for what is different. I think in Jr High they might of called something like "scientific method".

I am leaning toward Network not system?

I know its sorta old thread but thought I'd toss in my speed test results. I run a dlink wireless router for my laptop always showing excellent strength w/ 54mb/s but I did a speed test and was greatly dissapointed, Ping - 120 Download- .65 upload- .31. So you thought yours is slow haha. Thing is my interenet doesnt seem that slow but its all Ive ever had so Im used to it. I do notice a difference though when I go to my uncles house and run my laptop off their wireless especcially when watching movies off Netflix instant.
Ill have to test my desktop which is hard wired into the router.
I have Yahoo DSL btw.
