Newbie and a question...

I have an Acer Aspire that I purchased last Christmas. It has worked great for over a year.

The other day my daughter clicked off the internet, and shut the laptop. I have the laptop set so if you close the lid it shuts down instead of "going to sleep". When I tried to turn the laptop back on I got the Acer screen, and then it went wierd/white'ish and I held the power button to shut it down so I could restart. When I tried to restart I got the "safe mode" restart screen. When I procceded past that I got a black/blue screen. Shut it down again with the power button. Now everytime I try to restart the laptop the LEDs light up, the fan kicks on, and the HD clicks and the laptop powers off. Then it will restart on it's own. LEDs come on, fan starts, and HD clicks and shuts off. It will do this as long as you sit there and let it. Doesn't matter if it's on battery power, or plugged in. I removed the battery and let it sit over night, reinstalled, and that exact same thing happens...

Did I just loose all my pictures and files for good? Is this a common occurence?

Thanks for any help !

Welcome to the forums.

Well you didn't lose anything on the hard drive. That can be recovered via different methods. Pull out the battery and try starting the notebook with the Ac adapter.

It sounds like your graphics card is shot. Like Steve said, you didn't lose anything, but you will need to get your graphics card and possibly your motherboard replaced. If that would be too expensive an option and you've got another computer available, you can take out your hard drive (the part that has all your data stored on it) and put it in an external enclosure. Then just plug in the external enclosure to your available computer and you'll be able to access whatever you need from it.

Also, a CMOS reset would be a good idea too.

I did that and it does the same thing.

I also pulled the HD and tried to start it and it does the same thing (although the HD wasn't in there to click anymore)

I am not sure what that is...

We can give this simple procedure a try. Remove your battery and AC, then hold down the power button for 30-40secs. Reinstall the battery and AC and see if it makes any differences.

CMOS battery - this requires taking the laptop apart to get to it.

cheers ...

I understand, and I did do that a few times with no luck...

I was even told to unhook all power to the unit for a long period of time, reinstall power, and hold the power button down for at least 20 seconds. I did that too, and it still does the same thing...

You did get into Safe Mode as mentioned. What I would do next is to swap the ram modules around, or even removing one.

cheers ...

Hi, i'm also newbie here, like steve said CMOS reset would be great, but if you want the safest way just bring you laptop to the nearest service area
