Hello.

What is the MAX Size hard drive my Dell 9400 can take ?

The 9400 went down during last night and came up on the screen with this.

** Hard Drive - DST short Test**

Test Result : Fail

Error Code 2000-01-42

Msg : Unit 0 : DST Log Contains Previous Error(s).

**Hard Drive - DST Short Test**

Test Results : Fail

Error Code :2000-01-46

Msg: Unit 0 : Drive Self Test Failed. Status Byte = 79.

IT GETS TO WINDOWS XP BOOT SCREEN AND THEN GOES TO A BLACK SCREEN WITH SAFE MODE NORMAL AND LAST GOOD CONFIG ECT, WE HAVE TRIED ALL OF THEM AND IT WILL NOT BOOT UP.

My dad knows a canny bit about Computers and he said it's the hard drive.

My main Q is that What size max can the 9400 Take ?

Thanks for those who reply

Any 2.5" SATA drive should work.

(EDIT: at least I am pretty sure - I see those drives now go up to 500Gb there may be a limitation in the BIOS but I don't see why there would be)

Another Q here Lads, Will i be able to Swap my Hard drive from my Dell Inspiron 9300 and put it in my Dell 9400 and use the 9400 until i get another hard drive ?

Just wanted to know coz the 9400 is twice as fast or 3 times faster than the 9300 with 1 GB of ram and the 9400 has 2

It depends on which version of the I9300 you own. There were two versions manufactured, the oldest and far away most common used a PATA drive which isn't compatible with the SATA drive in your machine. The later and much less common I9300S variant was the first Dell laptop to use SATA and would be compatible. The connectors are different between them.

If you don't know which you've got, go to the "Device Manager" and look under Disk Drives, the model number for your drive will be listed which you can then reference on the net. Otherwise you can just pull out the drive from the 9300 and compare the connector with your 9400. It's pretty easy as there are only 2 screws holding it in place. But I prefer the Device Manager method as I don't like putting a screw driver to my machine if I can avoid it.

I hope this helps.

Ciao
