I just bought a new Toshiba P305d-S899e. I thought it was a good deal, but when I try to play some new games that I got for it, they are all choppy and just aren't any fun to play. I really like this laptop except for the graphicsw part of it. I was wondering if anyone knew a way to upgrade my graphics card or download an upgrade or something. I would be willing to do anything short of getting a different one. It has an amd turion x2 processor, Vista 64-bit, and ati radeon x1250 graphics.

You can get your system drivers up to date, using Vista and Toshiba updates. If they are not present, then leave them.

Clean up your start up processes and services - disable unneeded ones. Create a gamer profile with minimum background processes.

Other than that, you are stuck with the gpu that comes with the comp.

How do I know which ones are unneeded and which ones are gonna mess up my computer if I erase them.

I use this to review my start up processes and DISABLE (not erase) the ones that I don't need.

You can list them out and we can all chip in for you.

Most games won't be playable on this laptop. You would most likely need a better processor (CPU) and video card (GPU) to get things to run better. Upgrading the GPU first would probably be the best bet but I'm unsure what clockspeed your CPU is. Unfortunately, these are laptops, and a lot of times parts are simply not possible to upgrade or the upgrade price is exorbitant. Most likely, your GPU is soldered to the motherboard, which means its not replacable (you should look this up just in case it is replacable). I really don't think there's much of anything you can do to make your games playable on this machine although I suppose you can't give up hope.

It is very much depending on what games that you play. We have come a long way from the days of my still running old eMachines M6805, where the specs are less than what the OP states. Yet it runs many games brilliantly such as CoD, WoW.

I would not touch the Add/Remove Programs

Can you list out the start up processes using msconfig (startup)?

I have a Toshiba A215 which has pretty much the same specs as yours...I have the 1200x which is a shade better overall than yours...I had the same problems trying to play games, It will play them but choppy and bad lagging, and after I downloaded all the new drivers and even disabled some start up processes, it made it a little better but not enough to play COD4 or any other system demanding games. I e-mailed/called places about upgrades, and pretty much said you need to buy a better computer because the card is integrated(built in) into the motherboard. So, I left my Toshiba as a home/work computer and ordered the one below in the siggy,,,I won't have no more gaming problems anymore. But, You don't have to spend crazy oney like I did to get a computer that will play most of all games out there. Sager(pc Torqe.com) has good midrange computers too that have the abilites to play most of the games out there at very good competitive pricing...Have fun, Happy Shopping and Good Luck!! Don't get me wrong you have a good computer but just not a very good gaming computer...I have had mine for 2 years now and had no problems at all with it( Knock on wood).

How do I see what my startup processes are?
Go into control panel, then click on system maintenance, Then click performance information and tools, then you will see in the margin to the left it will say manage start up programs. clilck that and you will see a list of all the things started when windows is started and in turn slows down your computer duing start up and overall. While your there it may not make much or any difference but turn down your apperance. this option is right underneath and it says adjust visual effects. Then click on adjust for best performance...Now this will change your window back in to looking like the classic style but it does speed things up some...But like i said i doubt that it will make gaming better but everything helps...Good luck!!!
