Can someone rank these videocards?

Thread Starter
For Gaming Purposes:
nvidia GTX260M 1024mb
nvidia GTX280M 1024mb
nvidia GT130M 1024mb
nvidia 9650GT 1024mb
nvidia 9800M GS 512mb
ATI HD3870 512mb
ATI HD3870 512mbx2
ATI HD4850 512mb

Why can't they just call them something simple so one can compare them easily (i.e. GTX2xx series and 9xxx series; which one's better? Where do the HD3xxx/4xxx series stand?)... -_-

P.S. As for the CPU, P9600 (2.66GHz Core 2 Duo), or the Q9000 (2.00GHz Core 2 Quad)? I will be running engineering software, such as AutoCAD, MatLabs, etc., but do also want decent performance for modern 3D games (which is why I'm not going for a workstation GPU).

In order of performance (best to worst)
  • ATI HD 3870 X2
  • Nvidia GTX 280M
  • Nvidia GTX 260M
  • ATI HD 4850
  • Nvidia 9800M GS
  • ATI HD 3870
  • Nvidia GT 130M
  • Nvidia 9650M GT

for CPU, it makes a difference how the game is written. For the newest games, the quad core will be better. For games that aren't coded for more than 2 cores, the higher-frequency dual core will be better.

I would definitely take the Core 2 Duo but that's just me.

As for the GPU nomenclature it is actually quite simple. Ignore the first number in the name and then look at the second. That lets you know its relative league. A number such as 1 or 2 means integrated, 3 or 4 means consumer, 5 or 6 or 7 means budget, and 8 or 9 means enthusiast.

So a 7800 GT is better than a 8700 GT in general (just an example).
And a 8800 GTX is better than a 7800 GTX simply because the second number is equal and 8>7.

I just say this as a guide for you to use from now on. Its not a science, but it typically works. Of course right after I tell you that I have to tell you that Nvidia's new 26X series doesn't abide by those rules technically (as you can see from the list in Djembe's post).

to what zzpulp said. Personally, I'd say that consumer is 3-5 and 6-7 is "performance" (since that's what Nvidia calls the category), but those are minor details.

One reason Nvidia's card names are so difficult this year is because it's their tenth series. Instead of updating, say, the 9600M with the (10)600M, Nvidia chose to switch around their naming scheme almost entirely to the point where they updated the 9600M GT to the GT 130M. That's a performance card (even though by the number scheme it should be a consumer card). They've also got 2 apparent series released at once (G** 2**M and G** 1**M), even though they're all actually part of the same series. The hope is that this new numbering convention will be ironed out within the next couple years so we'll have a better idea of what on Earth the new Nvidia card numbers mean.

Here is a link to Notebookcheck.net...Gives a list of all video cards available today and there performance levels from number 1 to number what ever...200 or someting like that...and it has reviews on every card...http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-...M.14558.0.html

Interesting results...Benchmarks etc...
