Acer Travelmate 2310/2313wlmi (Boot probs)

Hello
So i got hold of an older laptop the other day, the guy told me it had some defects because he couldn't get it to boot.

I got a power adaper/two RAM memorys with it, No harddrives though.
So i power it up and most of the time i just get a black screen and nothing is happening.
But sometimes i get the ACER startscreen saying (press F2 to setup)

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t64/kaynovak5/3.jpg

But when i press F2 it then says (Please wait...)

And nothing happens.. ive tried several CDs in the CD-drive like Win XP install CD, Hirens Boot CD & Kororaa Live CD - but nothing works its just stuck at "please wait..." and ive waited like 5min.

Thing is also that when i power up the laptop the FAN turns on for some seconds but then it stops same with the CD drive, it reads but then stops.

Ive tried swapping the RAMs i got with the laptop but no luck.
Could this just be that i have no HardDrive in the laptop or is there something else thats faulty like CMOS battery or motherboard?

Can you pros identify anything of my descriptions i would be very very happy!

Thanks in advance!
PS. Also a button gets turned on/light up when i start the laptop, don't know if its relevant in any way or what is does. DS

I would first get some other ram sticks to try, and definitively a drive to install.

cheers ...

You might try the access panels on the bottom, and see if the fans are full of hair/dirt which can cause heat problems and the laptop to turn off. Also try hooking up the laptop to an external monitor, to see if that works

Somehow the laptop now boots a bit further.. i can gain access to bios and change to CD as first boot.
Then i can begin to load linux live CD but it always halts to an stop at some point and the screen gets some weird symbols and some color changes... what can this be?
I can only see one fan inside the laptop... and one silvercolored heatsink(or whatever its name is) and that piece get VERY hot.

Any input?

EDIT: I removed the heatsink and underneath is some chip (SiSM661MX) i don't know if it supposed to have thermalpaste on it?
I can't see any now and the screws where tampered with so somebody obviously have taken of the heatsink before.

Remove that access panel and get some canned air and blow it out good. Keep the can upright because if your turn it upside down, the can sometimes spits out water. Make sure the battery is pulled and a/c is unplugged first

Alright ive came a bit further in this quest with my first laptop!
Ive managed to get to Ubuntu Live CD and messed around in there a bit, WIFI works, USB ports work, screen seems fine (If not moved while it ON because then it gets alot of weird colors and the comp freezes)

I have spoken to other people and they think its the RAM's that makes the computer hard to boot and the reason it freezes.
And then maybe some wires or something that are loose inside that makes the screen so weird if moved while ON...

Will try some new parts tomorow i hope.
Then when i get the currage i will try and dismantle the laptop and see if all cables are attached and fine.

I have blown with air.. but have not removed big parts as back-cover, front cover, keyboard..

I bought a old Acer Ferrari 3000 for 25$, took the RAMs from that one and put into the travelmate.
I dont know if it made any difference but it seems they work better but it still hard to boot and so on..

It seems like the laptop only likes ONE RAM slot, if i put two RAMs or a RAM in that perticular slot it doesn't boot.
And if i hit/tap the laptop underneath a few times it boots.. he he.

Anyway, have installed XP now, wifi works, and i have installed some programs/drivers - but i get random bluescreens quite alot. Different messages, dont remember what they say though.

And if i install the VGA drivers sometimes the screen is messed up inside windows. So i run without any VGA drivers for now. Works but bit slower.

When you get a blue screen copy it down and post it here word for word.
Tried going into Control Panel, device manager to see if there aare any hardware conflicts???

I will, took out the RAM i used and put in another RAM that came with the Ferrari 3000 laptop.
Now my travelmate have been working for some 3-4 hours without any bluescreens or errors.
Though i haven't moved around with it, its just sitting there because i guess if i start to move around with it it'll shut down.

But ill post logs if it happens again..
Where can i find these logs?

You never said what operating system. I will assume XP.
Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
Open up each piece of hardware by click on the plus sign (+) and see if there are any hardware conflicts ie yellow or red exclamation points.
Or check system info at:
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information, Components to see if each device is working properly
