My wife uses am Inspiron 6000 and recently she was getting a constant error where the computer would not "see" the HDD during boot. Therefore, it didn't boot at all. Since the screen said HDD failure, I replaced the HDD. Everything worked fine after that. Now, she is getting the same errors again intermittently. Is it possible that the CMOS battery needs replacing? I updated all of the drivers and Bios during the last HDD install 2 months ago. Any input would be most appreciated.

My guess is the hard drive is becoming slightly dislodged from the connector of the motherboard for some reason. I don't know of any easy solution to this problem. You could open up the laptop and inspect the region where the hard drive connects to the motherboard I suppose.
The drivers on your computer shouldn't have any effect on this problem. Now this isn't really a viable option but you could try enabling "thorough boot" (or something like that) in the BIOS instead of "quick boot." The notebook will take much longer to boot but it might work to stop the problems.
