Acer Aspire 6530G - slooooow

Hi there,

I bought an aspire 6530G about a month ago (Turion x-2 rm-72 2.1ghz, 4gb ram, 320gb hdd, Mobility radeon 3650, running vista 32 bit). Its currently running extremely slow and struggles to perform basic tasks my older lower spec xp laptop had no problems with, such as playing music from my external hdd. Startup seems to take an age also.

Has anyone else had similar problems this machine?

Cheers

I assume that you have an up to date antivirus program as well as doing spyware checks with antispyware programs

Thanks for the reply Saugen. I've got Bitdefender AV 2009, fully updated, I ran windows defender and spybot, spybot found quite a few things which it removed, hasn't made any difference though unfortunately.
I've been playing company of heroes and i've also noticed it struggling alot more with this than it used to. Speakers crackle sometimes as well!
Do you think I've just got a dodgy machine?

Curious, have you done a disk cleanup lately??? Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk clean. Has the machine always been very slow or is this a recent development??
If recent, has there been any programing added recently which may not be Vista compatable

Yeah I try to stay on top of my disk cleanups and de-frags, there's very little i've put onto it to be honest, just a few games, all vista compatible.
Its always been slower than my old notebook, even though like I say its much better spec. Its annoying as I mainly use it for playing music, through my usb hdd, its slow to load, quite jumpy and even the media player graphics can't keep up with the music. Tried it with music saved on my internal hdd too, same story, took a good 10secs of a song before any graphics came up on the display.

I've tried adjusting the vista effects to 'best performance', again not much improvement.

Try this: It was posted and helped others on another forum:
press the Win key; type cmd; press Ctrl+Shift+Enter; and then hit Alt+C to confirm the elevation prompt
type this command, hitting enter after each line and then rebooting the computer when completed
netsh
interface
tcp set global autotuninglevel=highlyrestricted

I follow your advice but seems like it messed up my performance even more..sorry
Would you be able to redirect me so I can undo this change on the CMD
Thank you I really appreciate that

I got the same problem...like all of the ACER aspire 6530G users..
I think that we are all victims of freakin ACER's VISTA 32bit.....installed on a 64Bit core!!!!
SO CLEAN FORMAT AND INSTALL VISTA 64bit and forget the crap they give away together with the computers...
NEXT TIME LETS PAY ATTENTION ON THE SMALL LETTERS...
All seems to run smooth and reasonably fast..after that
Cheers

I highly doubt that is the issue...

Moving On.

A clean install of any OS will make any system run better. Just remember to update your drivers and keep the number of start up programs to a minimum.

That should allow any system to run more smoothly.

Also, don't rule out defective sectors on the hard drive which are often causes of slowdowns. Run the occasional hard disk diagnostic and keep an eye on the smart values to make sure your hard drive is nice and healthy.

sorry to point out the obvious but have you set the battery to high performance? i have a acer 6530G with the same specs, it seems fine apart from the Cpu running a bit hot.
let me know if this is the prob.

Always sound advice from Michelle. Also, you say you clean and defrag but are you using Windows utilities or good 3rd party software? Using Windows cleaning and defrag tools is like trusting a Windows antivirus. I run Cleanup!, then CCleaner, then MyDefrag. This combo resolves any lagging issue on any pc I have come across, taking for granted it isnt infected. I would suggest Comodo security suite if you want to have truly set it and forget it antivirus and security software.

Why Slow? I'll Tell You Why!

Okay, I know this it an old topic. But having an Acer Aspire 3650G myself I also noticed that it was, indeed, quite slow.

Here's some of the steps I Used to remedy it.

1. Remove Bloat-ware! Your Acer comes pre-loaded with a LOT of useless that you properly won't ever use... if you know what it does, but don't think you need it, Uninstall it. ESPCIALY that Games Centre. (Keep Arcade Deluxe as it contains Cyberlink software for Blu-Ray playback)

2. Configure the msconfig.
(For readers who know what to do, please go to 3.)
Press the Windows Key and type "msconfig" (without quotes) and press enter. Software that you do not use frequently should be de-selected to save time on start-up.

3. (My personal favourite) Install Windows 7.
If you want to keep Windows Vista, install the operating system to the Data drive (D) as it CAN take it. For the best results, use a NORMAL copy of Windows 7 and not an ACER provided disc so you don't get re-bloated. the vast majority of the devices that you have (excludes modem only I think) are already pre-loaded into the core of the operating system so a fresh, pure install should work fine (it did for me).

There's my tips, if anyone has any further hints and tips, don't be afraid to post them.
