Laptop won't turn on!

I have a old Sony laptop, a PCG-FX140 and has no battery, I have tried connecting a different Sony power cord but can't get it to turn on. Does a laptop require a battery in order to turn on? Am I using the wrong power cord? or is there something wrong with the laptop? Thanks.

No a laptop does not need a battery to turn on. You are probably using the wrong power cord or there is something internally wrong with the notebook. Are you sure you're using the cord that came with the notebook?

Describe what happens when you have the notebook plugged in and you push the power button.

And more questions to add to steve's list. Has the computer ever booted without a battery? When did the computer stop booting (with or w/o battery)?

I got this laptop from a police auction and for some odd reason, instead of them removing the harddrive, they just removed the battery. They said the laptop is sold as-is and nothing else came with. The power supply used was a power supply for a different sony vaio and it plugs in correctly but the laptop will not turn on. So only two things can be wrong, the actual laptop or the power supply. I'm planning on getting a universal one to test it with.

so today, the replacement AC adapter came for the laptop. The problem still persists and the laptop will not turn on at all. If it at least get's to the bios, I can work with the OS but will not even power up. What can be one big cause that the laptop is giving me this issue?

To me a universal adapter could cause the same incompatibility of an adapter from another machine. The only way to confirm that its not the adapter is just to buy the original adapter supplied with that machine.

For the laptop, I didn't get a universal adapter but an replacement adapter for the actual laptop. Not sure if anything is supposed to light up (on the laptop) when it's charging but I get nothing.

However stupid it sounds, I think I have heard someone mention having to hook up a battery to boot. It would be a ridiculous design of a laptop but that would be the last thing you could do to check if the laptop even works. It will probably just turn out to be a waste of money though.

well if you've got a known good ac adapter (most vaios use 19.5v or 16v) and it still won't power...the next place to look would be the DC jack...what kind of shape is that in? is it loose? you should see a pressure pin inside that should be slightly bent to make contact with the AC adapter...my money is on the dc jack, anything beyond that is $$

keep us in the know...
