m9700 Won't Start / Power Up

I have an Alienware m9700 which I have had for almost 3 years.

About 6 months ago, my power adapter cord ripped and I couldn't find a replacement until this past February.

The replacement I ordered, the barrel center tip never did fit into my notebook right, but did give the notebook power. HOWEVER, I noticed my notebook was running hot.

About 2 weeks ago, my m9700 started shutting off abruptly in the middle of doing things. The busier the PC was, the more of a chance it would shut off while being used.

Normally I would have to wait 3-5 minutes before trying to restart it or it would shut off again and again while windows would try to load, but it would always restart after waiting for a few minutes.

Well, last night it shut off, and won't come back on. I am at a loss as to what I might have to replace as well as waiting around to find a 'standard' adapter once I replace the parts which may have burnt up.

Let me know some ideas of what it could be. Right now the notebook doesn't really doing anything but make a very faint beep type sound when I push the power button to turn it on. Sometimes the hard drive will kick in and start to spin, but normally not. I get a faint beep, a couple flashing lights, then poof everything goes off again.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Oh, I do not advise anyone buying or using the 'replacement' power adapters offered at ShopBattery.net .. Not unless they have fixed the issue with the center barrel tip fitting into the notebook correctly. Thing just sat in there loose and if you moved the notebook it would fall out. Often while connecting it to the notebook it would spark and the little rubber ring they put at the end of the center tip is all black and melted.

I emailed them of my problem a few weeks after ordering and got no response.

Ok thanks... Ill give you all a call tomorrow when I get off work.

With that said, does anyone here have any suggestions on steps I can take to start diagnosing and repairing my Alienware? I'd like to repair it myself.

System shuttingdown could be due to overheating, please make sure vents are dust free. You may also check if the gpu and cpu fans are clean, these are one of the things that could cause the system to turn off, we would like you to check for its temperature. If the system is not turning on, could be that the battery is completely drained, since the power port is damaged we will suggest not to use any power adapter as it may cause damage to the board or other components.

I haven't had a battery in ages. Will have to order one. Then again, how do I charge the battery if I have no power adapter?

LOL

Oh, just to add to that, my battery never charged with this 'replacement' adapter. So thats the main reason my battery is dead. It quit charging once I started using this 'replacement' adapter.

Im starting to wonder, are there TWO different adapters for the m9700's? One for the dual core CPU's and one for the single core CPU's? This could have something to do with why the 'replacement' adapters aren't working with everyone's m9700.

It makes me wonder if the dual cores use the m9750 adapters and the single cores use a different one???

All I know is, the adapter I got never connected to the DC input jack right. Makes me assume it was never meant for my notebook to begin with and why it was not tested before being sold to me.

Having the ac adapter connected to the system, the notebook will use the adapter and charge the batter while it is connected.

The m9700 does not support dual core processor and you should have received the right adapter, if the wrong one was sent we suggest to contact customer service support to address this issue.

Armando.... I think there is some confusion here and makes me wonder if you read through my initial post.

I called the number you posted, but that number is for Alienware. Why am I calling Alienware?

The adapter was sold through ShopBattery.net, not Alienware, so I am confused as to why I am being told to call Alienware.

Here all this time I thought you were a rep for ShopBattery.net....

Im not sure how Alienware can help me. They are the reason I ended up buying a 3rd party adapter to begin with after refusing to sell me an OEM one. Now you want me to call and tell them what? That thanks to their refusal to sell me a replacement adapter I was forced to order third party adapter which fried my notebook?

Im sure that will go over real well.

So again I ask. Did you even bother to read my post? If so, why are you having me contact Alienware support? Are they all of a sudden going to sell me an OEM power adapter? Sure would be a shocker.

Again, the battery hasn't charged since I started using the 3rd party replacement adapter. So that will do no good either.

Also, I have read several places that the m9700 uses different DC input jacks, that no all m9700's use the same DC input jack. That is why I asked about the processor. Im wondering why this is and if this is the reason the adapter I was sold doesn't plug into my DC input jack right.

If you goto notebook parts stores or even on eBay and look at the DC input jacks, it says right there that the m9700 uses different DC jacks depending on when you got your m9700. The 2.5mm center pins are for the R1 series. Then there is another type of input jack, which would be the one I have. 2.5mm barrel doesn't fit on my center pin.

Well, I was writing things down, getting ready to call Alienware, then I noticed something.

The adapter that ShopBattery.net sold me wasn't the right Amperage...

My m9700 calls for a 19V---7.89A power adapter..

The one ShopBattery.net sold me as a 'replacement' adapter is 19V---2.5A...

I should have known better to buy or use the piece of crap 3rd party adapter, but when Alienware tells its customers to 'google' for a replacement adapter..

Damn it Alienware... Im calling you in a few, and I hope you can sell me a new keyboard and adapter this time around.

Armando, WTF??? Why am I getting Dell support when I call this number?

The rep asks me for what I need. I tell them I need a part for my alienware m9700, she tells me 'are you aware you are calling Dell Home support?' I said yes, a representative from Alienware gave me this number.

She procedes to tell me they don't sell Alienware or any parts for Alienware.

Sounded like she was from India.

WTF is going on here?

Try it yourself. Dial the number, 3 then 1. You get Dell home and office PC / Notebook sales.

If you dial the number, 3 then 2, you get Dell home and office 'accessories and parts'....

They have nothing to do with Alienware at that number. That is Dell and they refuse to assist me.

She even went and asked her manager if they could help me. She said 'Im sorry, but we don't sell any parts or Alienware systems here.'

Her name was Leia.....

This is from Alienwares 'contact us' link on their website.

-----------
Please call 866-287-6727 or e-mail support@alienware.com for proper routing information.

Now, why is it that when I call this number I cannot get any support for Alienware? I can't get anyone to talk to about parts or service and the representative tells me I have the wrong number?

Whats crazy is, the lady asked what I needed, I told her the part I needed. Then she asked me what model computer it was. I told her an Alienware m9700. She says 'Sir, you do realize this is Dell.'

I said yes, but Alienware gave me this number and told me to call and talk to someone.

She said 'you must have dialed the wrong number.'

I said no, this is the number listed on Alienwares website and which was given to me by another representative.

She said ' hold on, let me go ask someone.'

She comes back and tells me 'Sir, as I said, this is Dell home and office support, and I asked and we don't have any Alienware parts or computers.'

I then asked 'well can you tell me who I CAN call?'

She had no freaking clue....

Sounds like someone needs to go figure out WTF is going on..... I got mad and asked her 'doesn't Dell sell Alienware computers? If you goto Dell and click on 'gaming notebooks', Alienware pops up.

She was clueless.... Now I really question my new Dell purchase. Im probably going to cancel since they didn't take the funds out of my bank account yet (5 days after purchase)....

Sounds like Dell doesn't have a clue either.

Just got off the phone with Alienwares corportate office. Am still having no luck getting an AC adapter from Alienware.

I did however talk to ShopBattery.net. Seems they sent me the 'wrong' adapter with my order in February.

When I told them the adapter I was sent was 2.5A she said 'that will cause your computer to shut off, doesn't have enough power.'

Exactly.

So I sent that adapter back and am hoping they send me a correct one this time.

The Alienware rep went to ShopBattery.nets website while I had her on the phone and looked at the adapter they were listing as compatible with the m9700, she said the specs look correct, right voltage, and right barrel center tip. So she said to try with them again and see if they send me the correct one or one that is compatible this time.

As I said, the one they initially sent me never plugged onto the DC input jack right. Would spark, the rubber piece at the end of the barrel center tip melted, and eventually the notebook wouldn't power up anymore.

I'm probably going to have to replace something else once I get the adapter as Im afraid it fried something in my notebook. Hopefully just the DC input and not the motherboard. Guess we'll find out soon.

same problem

I am having the same problem, my adapter got fried and now there is no way to get another. ive been on the phone with dell/alienware for 3 hours this week so far. Its really starting to piss me off, ive gotton 2 adapters in the mail so far, both dont work, both not even close to the one i had before. What pisses me off the most is, i paid $3,000.00 for a powerfull computer and customer support. Now that dell is running the show, there's a buch of tards running the show in techical support, theres no respect and nothing gets accomplished.

In the past, you were able to call alienware, a person would answer and you give them your account number and they knew actally what you needed, and you were off the phone in 5-10 minutes.

Now i have to be transferred threw 4-6 different people, all out sourced to india as none of them speak understandable english, I have to confirm my name/phone/address/billing information and order/account number every step of the way. Im placed on hold every 3 minutes and none of them seem to understand that dell parts will most likly not work on my alienware computer. What ever happened to customer service.

Alienware is dead now, its not what it used to be and never will be.

now to my point, where can i find a ac adapter for a m9700i-r1. My model number on the adapter says :0415b19180 but all the "googled" adapters I find dont have the same tip and the adapter looks different.

Input : 100-240v`, 50-60Hz 2.9a
output: 19v - 9.5a

any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Here is one on ebay, an origional TESTED and guaranteed by seller. Youd think with as many people looking for them (Im sure a lot of people gave up and bought new notebooks), that this guy would be able to get a forture for the thing lolz.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Alienware-M9700-...item1e5a6596c1

I still need to tear my Alienware apart and attempt to fix the power issue. Will be soon that I attempt it. Will post results once Im done. Been busy and hadn't had the time to do it.

Here's a hint. ebay has a search feature that you can utilize and add items too, for instance, a part number. You can select how long you want to search for that item. Then everytime one is posted on ebay, you get an email.

I have gotten many emails for these adapters since I quit looking for them.

Oh, and just an FYI. Shopbattery did fix the adapter they sent me and put a tip on that fit my 9700 DC jack.

Apparently (according to them) the 9700's have two different DC jack inputs, depending which series you have. The first adapter they sent me (which was listed as compatible for the 9700, didnt fit my DC jack right, which I think eventually led to my DC jack being jarred loose and breaking off from the motherboard).

I shipped it back to them and they replaced the connector tip to one that fits the notebook correctly.

Now I just have to figure out how to get power from the connector tip to my motherboard now LOLZ.

Is there a chance that you would post the hints on the power tips for us? Pics would be great also.
