Would be nice if it was documented somewhere wtf this solid orange light means on the power button.

Solid orange is not one of the options in the manual.

Good thing these people are not building rockets lolz.

That would be nice indeed if they document everything and anything that has to do with any models

For me solid orange means bad adapter, bad battery or bad motherboard. That's a lot of "bad" to guess at.

What's the best method for cleaning the motherboard and components?

Compressed air only does so much. Should I use rubbing alcohol on a cotton cloth? Are there things I should not get alcohol on?

Is there a way I can check the CPU and GPU fans with a multimeter?

Compressed air and q-tips are all that I use. No liquid of any forms on the motherboard for me.

I might wash mine in the bathtub with some scrubbing bubbles and a toothbrush. It has had soda dumped on it in its past. When I went to take the metal plate under the keyboard off, it was all stuck in there and sticky shit on boards under.

lolz

I stripped the m9700 down to the bare motherboard and chassis. Cleaned every component and the motherboard with cotton swaps with 91% rubbing alcohol.

Reseated everything, new AS5 thermal grease applied, reassembled.

Same result.

In the meantime, I did a ton of reading about 'solid amber' power lights.

Seems the solid amber is related to CPU. Either the CPU, CPU fan, or CPU not getting power.

All 3 of those will result in a solid amber power light.

So now I have to try and eliminate which is causing the problem. CPU chip going bad, weak or no voltage to the CPU chip, or the heatsink fan having gone bad.

How can I test the CPU chip and the heatsink to see whether or not they are good without having another notebook to test them in?

Hard to do. How about borrowing any working CPU chips and test it instead.

Think Im going to order the AMD Turion 64 2.4Ghz chip and go from there. Found one new for $19 which seems really cheap.

New heatsink fan is only $10-20 so if the chip isn't the problem, then Ill order the new heatsink next and eliminate one thing at a time.

I need a new heatsink anyways, when I took mine off and cleaned it, whoever owned the notebook before me scratched the shit out of the copper (was a refurbished system I got off eBay).

If neither the CPU or heatsink fan solve the problem. Im going to buy another m9700 on ebay that boots up but is having other problems for under $200, and between the two notebooks I should be able to get one working.

Sensible approach. But at some point one must call it quit. Set yourself a mark that you are willing to invest to make the thing going again since it can be very addictive in making old comps working again.
