Overheating on laptop

Thread Starter
I don't know why it started. All I know is that several weeks ago, my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1501) is suffering from extreme overheating. Let me explain. My computer will run games and programs fine - for maybe 20 minutes. During those 20 minutes, my laptop will slowly heat up and at its hottest, the fan suddenly starts to whir violently and everything on my computer slows down. Everything. My framerate drops to like 5 and no game is playable. This overheating ordeal even happens when I have a browser game on - once the whirring begins, even flash games become laggy. Its extremely frustrating and I cannot play any games whatsoever. I'm also worried about permanently damaging my laptop due to the overheating.

Is ther anything I can do to fix this? Or is there anything I can do to reduce the temperature on my laptop?

Thanks!

What CPU/GPU. How old? Have you monitored CPU usage in device manager? Temps with 3rd party application like Core temp? CPUID Hardware Monitor should show CPU/GPU and HDD temps.

If i8kfangui works on your computer try that. Also, elevate your laptop with bottlecaps (or whatever) so that air can flow under it to cool it.

<<What CPU/GPU>>
I believe my CPU is...AMD Turion 64 Mobile MK-36 (got it through blackbox and I may be wrong)

<<How old?>>
3 or 4 years old

<<Have you monitored CPU usage in device manager?>>
Yes, I have. CPU usage changes depending on what programs I have on...of course they are always high when I run games...

<<Temps with 3rd party application like Core temp?>>
around 70 C

<<CPUID Hardware Monitor should show CPU/GPU and HDD temps.>>
do not know what CPUID is

Nothing Ive done works. Ive cleaned out the fan and tried raising the laptop, but it still overheats. Unfortunately, i8kfangui does not work for my model

It's a program that controls processor throttling and voltage.

Personally, I'd recommend opening up your computer and cleaning out accumulated dust. Most overheating issues in older machines are caused by dust accumulation.

Sounds complicated

I actually tried opening my laptop for the first time just minutes ago...I could not get it open.

Isn't there something I can buy or do with my laptop that will make it stop overheating?

well, if you can't get it open, you could take it to a computer shop and ask them to get rid of any accumulated dust and debris on the inside. (if I'm correct that it's simply dust accumulation)

Take a peek at it first. It is quite simple and straight forward

Djembe recommendation taking your comp to a shop is a good idea, if you have concerns about working on it yourself.

Have you ever cleaned the dust out of system? That is the problem. You may of already damaged maybe not. You need to open up and remove dust. The fan is making noise because of resistance? I think? AMD's always run hot. Your CPU is fine. I am more worried about your fans and obstructions.

Once you get that big dust ball out you will be good. You have an obstruction.

I have had overheating issues with a lot of different brands I have had. From Acer, Dell, and HP to even Apple. I think some of it has to do with what programs you are running and the battery. It always seems to start getting very hot when the battery starts getting old.

This definitively needs to be explored a bit further. Thanks for the observation.

cheers ...
