medion mim 2230 dead as a dodo

hi, i have just been asked to look at a medion mim 2230 to find out why it wont start. the owner told me that it had been working on and off for a while sometimes it would start and sometimes would not. sometimes if he wiggled the connector going into the back of the laptop it would work but now it is dead. i thought it would be a loose connector inside so i stripped the laptop down and found the dc in socket is not loose so either power is not going in or the mainboard is dead. what i need to find out is how to test the dc in socket to see if it is working and how to test the mainboard and find out which one is at fault.
I have tested the charger and that is ok. i also tried another identicle charger and that did not help either.
can anyone help please .

The fact that it worked sometimes when wiggling the connector would tell me that the jack would need to be replaced.

The AC outputs, sometimes the measurements can be misgiving, not to doubt your work. Borrow another one and try out.

The above steps are what I would do before digging deeper.

cheers ...

hi, i have tried a couple of other chargers and still no response. the front of the dc jack looks very slightly pushed in so its probably been knocked at some point.the fact that it is a seperate board connecting to the mainboard and the usb`s on the same board do not work either points to the dc jack being faulty, but i cannot locate a replacement board.

I have exactly the same problem with a MIM2230, and I have purchased another mainboard that still fails to show any sign of life. I think the fault is with the daughter board that the power jack sits on but I can't find one anywhere. Where do I look for spare parts (except ebay!)?

Have you looked into post#4 above and give the seller a shout?

Yep; I've contacted about a dozen sites & suppliers who are not directly advertising this part for sale in the off chance that they can point me in the right direction. One or two have already come back to say they haven't got it (PC Hub & one ebay shop). Funny how there's lots of mobos about for this model but no PSU daughter boards, which must mean that they are all busted so not good to sell.

There are plenty of notebooks out there that don't carry replacement "unit" parts. If customers have a problem, they would just replace the whole unit. In your case the whole mother board.

You can try to get the PSU module out and try searching based on any markings that you can see and read. Hopefully some electronic stores can come up with the replacement.

Neh.. I already made the mistake of replacing the motherboard, which made no difference. This little PSU board sits in the case separately from the mobo and has the DC input jack, 4xUSB ports, R/H Speaker socket and Video-Out socket mounted on it. It then connects to the mobo via 2 many-stranded cables terminating in DIL style plastic blocks which plug in at each end. It's this little board that I want to replace now as this must surely be the faulty part.

Can you post a pic and share with us the markings on the board? And a pic where it sits on the board as well?

I just took these pics to send to suppliers in Singapore and Taiwan..

The power socket is situated on top left corner or right top corner? Just want to be sure of the position.

Just took this as well to show the numbers

Sorry I haven't got the laptop infront of me now. The little board / DC input jack, USB's etc sits in the top-right corner of the base casing almost under the r/h screen hinge.

So I have 2 markings:

. GP 8258 C DD GB A 609157 0060 YK

. TF041-TH-PCB-PWA-82851 8858 / Daughter_6L_BD

Are these correct? Hard to make it from the pics.

Markings on the board are numerous but include:
ASSY.411810400004-R
TF041-TH-PCB:PWA-82581_8858/DAUGHTER_6L.BD
HL 94V-0
E251244
and on a paper bar code label
GP.8258 IC DD.GDA609157.0060. YX

Thanks for staying up with me but its midnight now so perhaps we can take this up again tomorrow? Better both get some beauty sleep Lol!

Have a good night rest. I will try to shoot this information further to the blokes in Europe.

Update - no go so far. But a suggestion was that what if you "remove " the USB from the board.

Confusing suggestion Q! Do you mean "remove" as in de-soldering and physically removing the 2 twin USB ports from the board? If so I fail to see the relevance to the problem. If on the other hand you mean "remove" as in software/BIOS set-up then I won't be able to do that as the laptop doesn't power up.

I in the meantime have got a little further with this as in:

1. A startling admission that there is a major problem with these boards and they suffer an extremely high failure rate.
2. They are no longer produced by the manufacturer.
3. There are specialist firms who will repair the boards for "ONLY £100.50" + VAT.
4. The main problem is with overheating of the centre DC pin where it enters the board, causing carbonisation and loss of conductivity.
5. I have located a fair-minded outfit in Birmingham (sparesweb.com) who may be able to offer me an affordable solution. They have my board and are taking a look.

Yep. Removing the USB = desoldering them from the board.

Great that you found the place, hopefully just some resoldeting with newer parts? 100 quids plus is a bit stiff for such a small board.

cheers ...
