XPS M1710 Serious Problem black screen won’t boot

Thread Starter
When I start up my laptop the Windows splash screen loads but with vertical lines then the screen shows random fuzzy lines and colours and then the screen goes completely black and nothing happens. At first I restarted and ran in Safe Mode and ran CCleaner which after restarting worked for a short period but then would suddenly go to a black screen and one occasion went to a blue screen with the following message

*** Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check/Memory Parity Error
*** The system has halted ***

I have also tried a system restore from Safe Mode that worked for a few hours but then went back to the black screen.
Now after restarting from Safe Mode it goes back to the black screen after the windows loading Screen. The computer is still powered on but the LED indicator is not flickering.
I have also tried plugging in to an external monitor but it still has the same problem so the problems not with the monitor.

Any help with this problem would be much appreciated

Specs:
Dell XPS M1710
Windows XP Home
2.00ghz Core 2 Duo
2x1gb 667mhz ram
80gb sata hard drive
nVidia 7900GTX

sounds like your memory had fried. if you have 2 sticks try taking one out and use just one of them each time. see if it helps.

Its not your main memory that is the problem. It might be your video card (GPU) memory but thats not even important. Your GPU is dead. You will have to get another one.

Looks like we might have to put a sticky up about broken graphics cards. There seem to be quite a few posts about this recently. Personally, I have used 2 6800 ultra's, a 7900 GTX, and a 7950 GTX for years with no problems.

Your problem is a dead (dying?) GPU. My M1710 went through this twice before it was replaced by Dell with an M1730.

On the bright side, if your unit is like mine, you should be able to boot using an external monitor. After the system has started booting, hit the FN+F8 combination to get it to switch to the external monitor and boot into safe mode. From there change the graphics driver to a standard VGA driver and you should be able to boot into Windows (still using the external monitor). It won't look pretty, and there will be lines all over the place, but you will be able to access your files and backup all your stuff.

Call Dell and get a GPU replacement.
