Better Business Bureau ratings

Thread Starter
Every so often I get curious as to how computer brands are doing according to the BBB, so if anyone else shares my curiosity, here's the latest, from best to worst, for the brands I looked up -
  • Toshiba: A+
  • HP: A
  • Apple: B
  • Lenovo & OCZ: B-
  • Sony: satisfactory (no letter grade)
  • Dell: D
  • Acer, Asus, & Sager: F

I guess there are some reasons to be a Toshiba fan!

In a nutshell:

"The Better Business Bureau (BBB), founded in 1912, is not a government agency, but a network of local BBB organizations based in the United States and Canada, which work together through the Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB). The BBB goal is to foster a fair and effective marketplace, so that buyers and sellers can trust each other ("Start With Trust"). Many BBB services can be accessed online through their website.

BBBs gather and report information on business reliability, alert the public to frauds against consumers and businesses, provide information on ethical business practices, and act as mutually trusted intermediaries between consumers and businesses to resolve disputes. News media frequently turn to the CBBB and local BBBs as expert sources of news about scams and consumer issues."

I don't see these ratings as very accurate. Why is Dell rated so low? because they have such high sales volume?

I have only been familiar with the BBB for brick & mortar businesses. I'm not familiar with what they have done with mail-order and on-line business ratings. My impression is that they rely on volunteered information (mainly complaints), rather than survey data. At first glance, I would probably have more confidence in forums such as notebookforums.
