Connecting to my HDTV

Greetings all.

So I've been watching some HD movies that I downloaded on my laptop, and I've been watching them on my HDTV that is connected to my laptop via a VGA cable. Everything is fine with connecting it, settings are all right, but when I watch HD movies, about every 10 minutes it freezes up (the movie, that is) and I have ti close my VLC player and restart it.

I do not have this problem when I watch regular format (not HD movies) on my TV when connected to my laptop, but only when watching HD movies. Does this have to do with the type of connection? Will if work if I buy an HDMI wire and connect that to my laptop instead of using VGA?

Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

Nope. It has nothing to do with cabling and connection.

Check your hardware acceleration, update your graphic driver where applicable, update your VLC (or try another free media player).

What is your system specs?

Want to give this a shot, just to try to sort out the HD freeing issue.

Just install it using default configuration.

Now another problem....

My HD movies are playing FINE. But when I'm not watching movies, I unplug my VGA cable and just use my laptop screen. But all of a sudden, when I go to plug it in to watch a movie, on the TV it says "Invalid Format". It only does this when I set the computer to only display the picture on the TV. Its shows up when they are both on at the same time. I did not change any settings, it happened over night.

Does anyone have any ideas to what happened?

(Will using an HDMI wire work?)
