Thanks for the info. BH Photo Video has it for 1229 with a 50 MIR, so its tempting. I love my Thinkpad T500 alot tho. T9400, 4GB DDR3...so idk if the dv7 would really perform any better or if it would be worth it. I'll keep thinking, what kinda battery life are you getting again?

Let's not go into battery life. Let's just leave it at "it's better off as a desktop"

I haven't timed it but if I had to guess a number, I would say somewhere between "Piss Poor" and "F'in horrible...Ridiculous"

Thanks for bringing up memory! That's another big thing I wish was different! DDR2-800? That motherboard/CPU can support DDR3-1066 and not void the warranties! That means you could get away with much faster DDR3 without any problems. BUT NOOOOO, they put slots for DDR2...bah With everything else they packed in there, why DDR2? Oh well, it gets 5.9 on Windows Performance Index, but that doesn't mean crap with the real world CPU intensive stuff I do....

Btw, It has an LED screen, NOT LCD! Wow, I didn't know that. I just left the computer store out here because I was looking for some upgrades to this dv7, and they were telling me about the new LED displays in the $5,000 MacBook Pros and how super amazing they are. I never heard of them and I had one in my hands during the entire conversation haha!

Yeah I did know about the LED screen, def a nice feature, i'm sure its super bright...a family member of mine has a dv4t with the LED screen and it looked really nice.

I have been thinking about getting this laptop for a while. I haven't found anything with comparable specs. I did find it at newegg.com for $1349 then a $50 dollar rebate making it $1299

Hmm. I paid $1525 out the door. Getting $50 back in the mail. Guess I shoulda ordered it online. Oh well, I hate the wait!! When I put down money, I wanna be starting it up and start installing Adobe Creative Suite in my truck in the parking lot.

Buydig one sells it for $1189 not sure about tax/shipping.

Amazon has it for $1199 after $50 rebate. I think shipping is free.

btw, if I had the option to swap for another laptop, it would probably be this one:

It's similar to mine but has an 18.4" screen and an NVidia 9800M GT. Put a solid state drive in there and you will probably hit a 5.8 on Windows Performance Index. It is a bit pricier but if you are a gamer, you will probably be MUCH happier!

You are much better off spending $300 on an 80 gig Intel SSD than on 8 gigs of RAM the performance gains would be much more noticeable. The only real benefits off that much RAM will be for running several virtual machines, but if you got the cash for both then go for it.

I run Firefox with 35 tabs open and it takes up 650mb. I run Photoshop with 10 large images open, Visual Studio, Torrent Client, and Multiple Virtual Machines with up to 1-2GB each and I still have RAM left over. I also use an 8GB SD Card for Readyboost. It has a read speed of about 7500kB/s and write speed of about 4000kB/s. When I put the SSD drive in there, the write speed of that SD card jumped to over 100,000kB/s but the read speed was the same. The SSD makes a HUUUGE difference!

And as far as SSD prices go, the best bang for the buck is a 128GB. 32GB was like $180, 64GB was about $250, 128GB was $259, and 256GB was $650.

Btw, those numbers are only from the SD card used for readyboost. The SSD speed is about 150MB/s read/write with bursts much higher. Visual Studio opens in less than a second with the SSD. Full HD search without indexing takes about 45sec-1.5min with 60GB used and a lot of files.

Don't listen to the SSD badmouthers. Do research on the brand you buy. A lot of advancements in SSD technology have been made since the bad publicity started and they are VERY much worth the $$.

I use a Patriot SSD.

There are really only 2 SSD's that are worth investing your money into. The intel x-25m and the ocz vertex, both available from newegg. The others on the market are plagued by stuttering problems and require a great deal of tweaking. I would heavily consider those if you are going to invest in a SSD.

Thanks for the tip MoffiaJ. I didn't know much about SSD flaws when I bought mine. I thought they were all fast and worked good. Luckily Patriot drives work well.
