PCG-R505DL won't power on

My PCG-R505DL was working fine but just shut off on me without warning last week. Now I cannot power the computer on at all. When my AC adapter is plugged into the docking station, the power light on the docking station is on so I assume the adapter and the docking station are ok; however, when I place the computer in the docking station, no lights on the computer are on. Similarly, if I plug the adapter directly into the computer, no lights come on. Any idea what the problem could be? I'm guessing the motherboard is shot or something but I don't know much about that stuff. Is there anything I can try to bring this thing back to life?

It could be a CMOS battery issue. That's what I'd start.

What exactly do I need to do? Is this something I can do myself or do I have to take it to someone?

Follow the steps here in the sony troubleshooting faq to see if it may be able to help you. I looked in the service manual on their site as well and couldnt find info on replacing the cmos battery for that model. On some models its easy to get to on others you have to almost take it completely apart. If the following faq doesnt help you; you may be able to take it to a local computer shop to be worked on, Just make sure they are used to working on laptops.

Go the easy way first, try another ac adapter, if you can get your hand on one.

cheers ...

I actually already tried those steps before I posted - no joy. I think I may have found the CMOS battery under the touchpad too. I disconnected it overnight and I'm going to try reconnecting it today and trying to power on the computer again. I don't think it's going to work but it's easy enough to try.

I don't think the adapter is the problem. Like I said, the adapter is powering the docking station so I have no reason to believe that there's anything wrong with the adapter. Plus it doesn't make sense that the adapter would be the problem anyway. The computer was running and then it just shut down. If the adpater suddenly went bad the computer just would have switched over to battery power.

Not necessarily, the switching to battery when AC Adapter goes "bad". It is simple to determine when the AC adapter is not charging (dead, bad); but when it is not giving out correct outputs (voltage, wattage) it is so clear to determine that it is bad.

Just my 2 cents suggestion :-)

cheers ...
