Windows 7 free for a year 1:59PM, Thursday 30th April 2009
Microsoft is effectively giving away Windows 7 free for a year with the launch of the Release Candidate.

The Release Candidate is now available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers, and will go on unlimited, general release on 5 May.

The software will not expire until 1 June 2010, giving testers more than a year's free access to Windows 7.

"It's available to as many people who see fit to use it, although we wouldn't recommend it to just your average user," John Curran, director of the Windows Client Group told PC Pro. "We'd very strongly encourage anyone on the beta to move to the Release Candidate."

However, Microsoft has previously urged the millions of beta testers to start from scratch, and not simply upgrade the beta, in a bid to replicate the real-world experience of installing Windows 7. Those who are determined not to undergo a fresh install have to follow a workaround published on the <

Engineering Windows 7 blog.

The Release Candidate includes all the features that will be available in the final version. "The Release Candidate is the near-finished product," Curran said. "It's now just final regression testing and performance enhancements."

Microsoft refused to be drawn on the final release date of Windows 7, sticking to the company line that it will be ready by January 2010, although most observers are predicting a late summer/autumn 2009 launch.

However, Curran believes that Windows 7 has already lifted much of the negativity that surrounded its predecessor. "The positive energy and momentum is quite a bit higher than it was in the Vista timeframe," Curran conceded. "People are excited about Windows 7."

Quick prediction: Microsoft's download servers are going to crash tomorrow.

If you look back at what happened when Windows 7 Beta was publicly released, their servers went down pretty quick from the huge demand. Chances are, the same thing will happen tomorrow for the RC.

theyve bulked up so they should presumably last better. and also the reason they crashed was everybody rushing because it was a limited release, this is an unlimited quantity until the end of the download period

and its up right now, my downloads at 75%

So what does this mean after the first year? What if you don't buy it? Does it just simply not work?

yep. one month before the expiration date it will shut down every 2 hours, then at the expiration date it will stop working completely.

I guess you're right. That was a much easier process than getting the beta. I just started the download (5%)

Actually, the shutdown every 2 hours will happen starting 3 months before the expiration. That starts in March 2010 and it expires in June 2010.

Crazy. Even crazier that they don't have a price on it right now...

It is an exceptionally long trial period. 10 months with a mostly-working free OS is a pretty darn good deal from Microsoft. I think they're still trying to repair the damage to their reputation that happened with the way they rolled out Vista.

I suppose. But i still have no interest in moving to Vista or Windows 7. Mainly because I don't own a DX10 card. They need more to convince me to move

If the audio mixing (5.1, 7.1, Etc) is better in win 7 I will move if not I have no reason to.

In my opinion, DirectX 10 is a lousy reason to switch operating systems anyway. It's not that impressive except in a few demos, and it slows performance down like crazy.

I use Windows 7 because it boots in around half the time as XP and has a better search function.

Sure they do,

. end price = how many downloads they gave out + how good feedback they receive

I totally agree with this, adding the old comp runs better with W7 than XP (go figure)
