Upgrading my m9750, please help!

These are my current system specs:

Alienware m9750/Windows® XP Professional/Dual 512MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7950 GTX /17" WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 LCD/Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7400 2.16GHz/2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz/120GB 7,200RPM (8MB Cache)

I want to upgrade to 4GB ram, add an extra HD, and upgrade to windows vista. If i get more ram does it have to be the same type as I already have? Im not really sure what my mother board can support. Can anyone tell me what the best ram I could get would be?

You need to make sure that motherboard supports 4GB of RAM. (Which it probably does)

However there's reports on the internet that the m9750 Napa mobo only supports 2.5g of RAM.

Ask an Alienware Agent/Rep for more info before proceeding.

Hi, the m9750 can support up to 4 Gbs Dual Channel RAM, Mikeyeg.

You will need to go with DDR2 SO-DIMM, 667 Mhz-like the
Kingston RAM 4GB DDR2 SDRAM Memory Module - KVR667D2S5K2/4G.

If adding a second HDD, it does support RAID 0,1, or a non-RAID Dual setup as well.
The second drive needs to be identical to the first for RAID, same size.

You will want to contact our support team for options available for your m9750 at
1-866-287-6727, option 3, then 1.

Have a nice day!

even with 4 gigs in the m9750 it will not address all 4 gigs of ram its a chipset limitation... even installing 64 bit os will not allow you to see all the ram....I know from experience you cant show 4 gigs...

Why couldent it support 4GB of Ram if there was an option to upgrade to 4GB when I ordered it from Alienware...

It's a bios issue I believe.

I found a second issue with my 9750, after installing 4GB of Kingston Hyper 5300 DDR2 RAM kit (a matched pair of 4-4-4-12 latency). The first issue, my computer sees 4GB of RAM but the BIOS only uses 2.5GB. Second issue, My computer uses VISTA so it lists the performance scores for the systems in the the computer. The old 2GB of RAM in the computer rated a 4.7. The new 4GB of Kingston rated 4.7 ??? I thought there would be some increase in the numbers.
Just to check what the difference in the RAM's speed would be, I installed the $GB of Kingston RAM in a second computer using VISTA!
I placed the Kingston RAM in a ACER 5520 that I had upgraded (I like building and rebuilding computers). Both have 2.3G processors, both have 7200RPM Seagate 250GB 16MB SATA3 hard drives (the 9750 has 2 X 250 set to RAID 0).
The ACER's RAM score on VISTA was 5.9!!!!!
I do not know if this is normal or something to do with mine (that is the 9750)?
I have used different types and speeds of RAM in the 9750 but 4.7 is the best score that it has come up with.

32bit Windows can use barely over 3 GB memory without extra tricks (on my lappie 3.07).

Crazy Vista RAM numbers

You are correct most 32 Bit systems can only see about 3.2Gb of RAM. The ACER 5520 that I used for my test shows 4GB of RAM in the computer, but can only use 3.3GB.

This is still a long way from the 2.5GB of RAM showing in the Alienware 7950. Plus can anyone explain how two different computers, both using Windows Vista Home Premium (ACER 5520 and Alienware 7950) both with 2.3G duel core processors (Intel for the 7950 and AMD for the 5520). Both with Seagate 250GB SATA 3 hard drives. Come up with with such a large difference in the Vista performance numbers for RAM, 4.7 for the 9750 and 5.9 for the 5520???
The numbers were taken, using the SAME 4GB of Kingston Hyper RAM !!!!

I can see a small difference in the VISTA RAM score, but not a full 1.2 difference.
I am wondering if there is some kind of limiter installed in the Alienware system, so that people will not overclock and damage the computer??
