I use Avast!

It´s free and has stopped everything that wanted to get in my computer. It´s light in resources as well.

In spyware I can recommend Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware tools. All of them are either free or have a free version which all do a great job.

I also would recommend Avast! as a good free antivirus program.

Can I jump in also? Avast

I use AVG on all of my machines. In addition, spybot scans and cleans nightly and I run ccleaner once or twice a month on top of that.

Moved to General Softwares.

+1 for Avast. Best I have found to date, and won't tear your system resources apart.

Best antivirus software?

I think one of my laptops may have a virus. Firefox will not completely launch. Which antivirus software do you recommend? I was using the free version of AVG 8.5.

I would recommend downloading the free scanner from Cyberdefender's website. I use it and it works great. The free version will get rid of some stuff, but the paid version gets rid of everything. Plus it includes 24/7 tech support which is great for someone like me (that's a little computer illiterate).

Can you expand more about "Firefox not completely launched"? What with IE? Same issue?

Want to give another antivirus app a shot? I got many issues with latest AVG, that it finally pushed me to use Avast full board now on all my comps.

This is what happens... Firefox 3.10 or Itunes will not completely launch. I double click the icon, the hard drive starts running but then it stops. I see the firefox process running in the Task Manager, but not the application itself. I can not kill the process. The same problem happens with Itunes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. I have defragged the hard drive, no problems detected. I also noticed that I was getting a "sgtray.exe" error (this link has info of the error) when I tried to reboot. I googled the error. It said that it could be related to IBM record now or other related apps blocking the internet port trying to access the internet to check for updates. I uninstalled apps that use the EXE but I still have the problem. When I run IE, it launches but it does not go to any web sites. Does Avast have a free version or is it only available in stores?

Avast is always free, as far as I can remember. It requires a simple registration.

May I suggest Avira.
http://www.free-av.com/

I've been using it on my Windows7 partition since beta 7000 and it's surprised me with it's lightweight, fast scanning and the amount of times it updates. For free, I don't think there is anything better. I still prefer NOD32 over it though, but I'm not willing to pay for it in RC.

It is not free but I use Kaspersky, found that to be very good and not to resource hog very happy so far

Thx for the suggestions. I decided to backup some files and restore the laptop to its original settings. Turns out that the original state is on a partition on the drive. I have restored and in the process of getting my settings back. I will try avast.

I was an AVG user for years, but it just started getting really buggy lately. Now I use Avast on all my notebooks.

Currently I use AVG for my free antivirus (older computers), and I have a licensed version of Kaspersky via ZoneAlarm suite (I like their firewall/interface/logs/settings).

In the past I have also used Avast and was very happy with it. I only find registering for the free yearly license gets to be a nuisance at times.

I have also used Trend Micro, which I had liked for a while due to its speed; but then I started discovering HUGE log files that started eating up my disk-space, and a fairly unfriendly uninstall process (leaves a lot of traces of the program behind). That deterred me from purchasing it again.

For most of my friends/family - I set them up with AVG. Free, Simple, Efficient.

The best anti-spyware imo is Spybot - Search & Destroy.

I've been happily using AVG for the past 2 years and have had no problems with resources or any virus getting in to my system.

Hope this helps!
