Best Free AntiVirus/Spyware?!? - Page 2

I never had any qualms with AVG until 8.5x came out. It has done nothing but havocs on ALL of my comps. Things like Internet connections just disappears, applications cannot start, system freezing now and then. This reminds me Zone Alarm a few years back, causing all sort of issues, like AVG did on mine.

Another interesting (independent?) read on the AV Comparative:

It is interesting to note that only AVG 8.0 is being mentioned, not the 8.5

I am not writing AVG off, but personally I feel that the current 8.5 version is just becoming too buggy to use.

Hi,

Here's a site I found that does the comparison of the supposedly top 10 anti-virus products worldwide. Saw AVAST as being in #17.... not sure why as based on what I've read and heard, it is a good anti-virus software...

I also noticed the same thing about what qhn mentioned on AVG 8.0 being used instead of 8.5.... I wonder why?

Bit Defender is no.1? I wonder why...

To be fair about softwares comparison, there is always an element of bias towards any products rating.

The majority of my comps was being protected with AVG for a long time, until issues started with AVG8.5, as mentioned above. For a few weeks, recently, AVG keeps popping out version one after another, without a detailed change log. This for me, is a warning sign that the software is going through some major problems.

The link scanning option, implemented in AVG 8 was also a big issue for me, dragging system performance to a crawl, until it was being disabled.

I am confident that AVG will correct all issues real soon.

I am for a simple free AV app, install it, updating each each day, and forget it :-)

I have personally used AVG but I felt kaspersky antivirus is the best. Kaspersky caught a lot of things that AVG didn't. So I felt it did a better job.

I haven't tried any other AV's. I have a simple McAfee Security Suite, which I will probably upgrade next year, and it updates quite a lot, and does the job very well as far as I'm concerned. I launched McAfee Virtual Technician and it fixed everything......and the simple Security Suite only costs around 40 bucks here. So far I'm happy with what I've got....and I'm also behind the firewall of the router (not sure whether that makes any difference).

One can also use this site/service - ShieldUp! - (one of many) just to check out how "secure" (really ;-)) one's system is. It has tips on how to correct certain shortcomings.

Came across this article early today, and am trying this myself along with Avast on my machine. So far no bad influence on system performance.

It sparked my interest due to the first general statement:

"Quite often, I'm asked if it's a good idea to use more than one anti-virus / anti-spyware program at the same time.

The answer to this question is both "yes" and "no."

Yes: it's a good idea to scan your PC using more than one solution -- whether it's anti-virus or anti-spyware -- as it's possible to sniff out additional, missed threats.

No: you shouldn't run more than one anti-virus or anti-spyware program at the exact same time as they would likely conflict...."

I use Cyberdefender and it works great! In the past I used AVG but I wanted to change to something that worked better. I got the free scanner off of Cyberdefender's website first. Then I upgraded to the full version which includes 24/7 tech support. They will answer any kind of technical question, not just about the software. I would definitely recommend Cyberdefender.

It has been running for over a week now with no negative effect in system performance, long term security shielding is yet to show any good impacts. I'd give it another month and see.

Well am trying MS (yes shock horror) MSE have just swapped over from AGV free to this for a test to see how it goes on my mini 9 - AGV was OK but for some reason my FF browser has been playing up (3.5.3) with constant freezing, changed the timing on the auto save function and disabled all add ins but could not get rid of this bug.

So while AGV may have been totally not at fault thought I would try the MS option which had some good reviews. My mini 9 has been upgraded with 2gig ram and 64gig SSD - so far it does seem better, also replaced FF3.5.3 with minefield (yes beta) 3.7a1pre cos I just couldn't move away from Mozilla.

So far so good early days but seems to have a small footprint.

Hi,

Has anyone else tried out MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials). I've been hearing a lot lately about this anti-virus and a lot have mentioned good reviews (especially about it NOT being a resource hog).

How does it compare with AVG, Avast and Avira?

I am running it at the moment on my 12.1" notebook just for kick for the past 2 weeks.

So it is now Windows Firewall, Defenders, MSE and Spyware Blaster on this comp.

1st impression: not so different in performance with Avast (less resource, quick and non-intrusive); I take it to leave it for another week before this MSE learns about my surfing habit.

Hmmm... ok, sounds like a good combination you have there. I'm seriously thinking of switching from AVG to MSE or AVira... I've been hearing a lot of bad reviews from AVG... and the last time my notebook crashed I was still using AVG (my guess is some virus could have gotten through).

. XP: performance is solid for almost a month now.
. Vista: now in the 4th days of usage.
