Best Free AntiVirus/Spyware?!? - Page 3

Well I will put in my two cents.. I am currently running Malwarebytes Anti-malware (real-time protection disabled) and MSE. Both seem to work well on my Windows 7 64-Bit machine. Been running MSE for months and it runs very stable for me.. Cheers

Thanks guys, I am convinced that I should go for MSE... now I need to figure out how to download it since whenever I try to download, the website shows a message saying that it's not available in my region....

Yes: it's a good idea to scan your PC using more than one solution -- whether it's anti-virus or anti-spyware -- as it's possible to sniff out additional, missed threats.

No: you shouldn't run more than one anti-virus or anti-spyware program at the exact same time as they would likely conflict.

Read (and download the free IOBIT Security 360) in full here!

Uh oh ... Too good to be true?

This app is in litigation at the moment:

Malwarebytes: IObit Stole Our SignaturesDatabase!

With vista, I was using AVG free ver. Then I switched to Win 7 and started having trouble with AVG, so I switched to Avast. That worked well. I have since switched to MSE. I love it. It integrates well with the OS and is not a resource hog. I periodically scan with Malwarebytes too.

I'm in my 3rd day of Avira AntiVir. It's pretty good so far, although the free version has a pop-up that happens once a day (after an update) that lists the benefits of different versions (in other words shows you what you're missing by not paying them for the next level up ) However, with that one exception, it's working out well.

Heyy... just finished upgrading just now too. Am going with Avira too and it's doing well so far.

Wow... just finished a system scan with Avira and it came up with 43 virus findings. Surprisingly, these never came out with AVG.

^^ AVG was holding you for ransom Pay up and get the full cleaning version.

Finally tried using MSE and I'm very very happy with it. Avira was ok although as Djembe mentioned, the splash screen appearing everyday when downloading updates was becoming too much of a nuisance.

Very noticeable improvement in performance since switching from AVG 8.5 to Avira and MSE.

I am happy with MSE performance as well. Just a note, once in a while I manually actualize the database definition, and times I did find some discrepancies in the update. Often a few days old.

Just wondering though.... why is there an MSE where there is already Bit Defender? Aren't both of them MS products?
Windows Defenders is an MS product. BitDefender is a paid service.

I was thinking about that as well although why is Bitdefender installed with Vista? (or probably I have confused myself since my laptop came with the manufacturers copy???)

3rd party arrangement. Why Norton would be installed on any PCs? We will see more of MS "bloatwre" free systems coming out as they open their own stores and get other arrangements with the manufacturers.

MSE findings

Has anyone encountered this? Since I've installed MSE, sometimes when I start up the laptop, it takes quite some time to load MSE. This probably happens after every 6-8 starts of Vista. And when this happens, the whole window freezes... and I can't do anything.

I'm not really sure if MSE is the culprit but it does show that when the hanging happens, the MSE icon at the lower left of the screen is RED and once it turns GREEN, everything turns back to normal...

I would recommend that you set the Windows update to another time than the standard 3:00. Also inside MSE, set the scanner to the time that you use your comp + 2hrs, this way MSE and Windows won't try to look for update and scan when you first start the comp.

Example is that MSE set the scanner for 02:00 Sunday - I would set it to may be 18:00 Thursday when I am already using the notebook.

Just an update on MSE. Family and work systems are not using this product exclusively for over a month now.

Verdict?
- can only strongly recommend.

Windows firewall and MSE are all that we use at the moment. Let us see how long this would last, but so far the performance and the protection get nothing from me (personally) but praise.

Just busting your chops :-)

I'm running MSE on all of my PCs - some have Super Anti Spyware installed as well but since i only have 4 licenses others are running MSE for both AV and ASW.

Given normal surfing habits and careful email opening, I haven't encountered a problem on any of my notebooks or desktops (about 10 machines all together).

RECOMMENDED - especially since its free with a legit copy of windows and you DO have a legit copy of windows right? ;-P
